Chinnies waking up and getting active at 3am!

Chinchillas are actually crepuscular, meaning they're most active during the early mornings and evenings. But I guess it can be different for our domestic chins. They are pretty adaptable when it comes to our schedules, though - I think they're good at getting used to a routine. =) Maybe you...

Will not stop biting/chewing my hair!

Oh, that makes sense! Thank you! I'll have to scratch his chin extra long now to make sure he knows I still love him. :P I'm covering my hair with a T-shirt now, and since my hair is hidden he has lost interest in scratching the back of my head, thank goodness.

Will not stop biting/chewing my hair!

Every time I'm laying down where Fuzz can reach my head, he always jumps on my shoulders and starts to chew my hair. I immediately brush him off, but he'll come back and the more I brush him away, the angrier he'll get. At one point he started pretty much attacking me because I kept shooing him...

    Introducing a new chinchilla

Thanks for the advice =) Now I'm just waiting to hear back from the breeder, and hopefully I can go through with this!

    Introducing a new chinchilla

Earlier in the summer I e-mailed a breeder about baby chins, and at the time they didn't have any, but she said she would let me know when they had some. Well, I got an e-mail yesterday and they do! They have a white mosaic male and he's the one I'm interested in, since Fuzz is a boy. I may be...

    Chewed an eraser!

Okay, thanks for the advice! I'll keep an eye on him. Ahhh, hehe, that's horrible! Chins can be such great designers. ;)

    Chewed an eraser!

I'm doing some homework on the floor while Fuzz is running around and I had to get up throw something away (Trashcan is in my room, but I was of course looking away for a second) When I turned around I saw him dashing under the cage with my pencil. I got the pencil away first, but he had taken...

    New fuzz butt! Bad fur.

Thanks everyone! I'm really glad he's here - he's amazing! He loves to be pet and scratched. He got a dust bath which has already helped his fur a little, but it may take a bit until it's fully normal. I've been pulling out dead fur while I pet him, but I'll also probably need to comb him, too...

    New fuzz butt! Bad fur.

I tend to browse around craigslist when I'm bored and look at the pet section because I guess I enjoy torturing myself by looking at all of those pictures and hearing the sad stories. =P Anyway, I came across an ad. for a free chinchilla... It surprised me, then I became a little concerned...

    Fresh Hay?

Thanks for all the info, everyone. =) Now I'm probably just going to go ahead and buy online because I can get more varieties and hopefully it'll be a bit fresher, though the stuff I have now is probably fine and will work well. Not dusty or moldy, just stiffish and dryish. I love the smell of...

    Picture overload!

Those babies are so adorable! Jurneeka looks huge and fluffy already, which makes me wonder how big she'll be when she's preggers.

    New Bridge

Those bridges are really cool - I hope to get one. The first picture with Poof is so cute. (When I read the words "Hanging out" the next thing that popped into my head was "down the street," like the That 70's Show's theme song.) Hehe

    Fresh Hay?

Since I've only bought one bag of hay, I wasn't sure what to expect as in how to determine freshness. I bought a bag of Oxbow Timothy and it's kind of stiff and dry. What does fresh hay feel like/how could I tell if it's fresh? Would you guys suggest buying it online rather than from a pet...

    RIP Little Buffy...

Thank you, everyone. I appreciate all of the thoughts for Buffy. This is definitely something that will never happen again. I hope it's a wake up call to other new members as well who don't have baby-proof cages if you have a young chin. It certainly is one for me.

    RIP Little Buffy...

I know. And that is why I feel completely terrible and awful about what happened. It's all my fault, I could have fixed it, but I didn't. I wish I could go back in time and change it. I deserve to be berated but she never ever deserved what happened.

    RIP Little Buffy...

Buffy was my first chinchilla, and I didn't even have her for more than two weeks. I'm beating myself up for it because I know it's my fault... I could have stopped it. She was just a baby and she could fit through the bars of the ferret nation. She would get out and run around at night even...

    Ralphy's favorite new toy.

Haha, that's so cute. Is that a little trail of poops I spot behind him? Maybe he's trying to clean up his mess. How thoughtful of him!

    Young Chin escaped from FN

Funny thing is, before I knew how old the chin that I got would be, I removed chicken wire from my FN that I had on for my rats. Maybe I should have kept it on! Darn it.

    Young Chin escaped from FN

Today (Well, since it's morning I guess it'd be yesterday) I got my chinchilla, and she's adorable. She's very young (Around 6-7 weeks old) and I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when it came to her behavior or how she'd be in a new home for the first few days. She's very sweet and has no...

My chins is destroying the hay rack

A holder made out of that stuff is bound to get chewed on and destroyed. But I like your before and after photos! Some chins just don't like to chew on certain stuff, I suppose. It just so happens that the hay holder you bought her IS something she'll chew on. Have you tried pumice? Or other...
