    Best Vacuum Cleaner

I agree with the others, Shop Vac is the way to go. I have a 16 gallon one from sears. It sucks up loads of tossed out shavings along with hair, poop and dust. I even use it inside the cages, the chins just move to the others side while I work. I use a teflon coated filter that is easier to...

    Bass Pans: Worth the money?

I have had lots of pans made by Ryerson's. Rich can make them to whatever dimension you need and is very reasonable on shipping.

    Different sizes

My scale also came from walmart. I know it couldn't have been more than twenty. I usually set up an empty butter container(we save everything) on the scale and put the chins in that to weigh them. It usually only takes a few seconds to get the weight and they usually stay in the dish that long.

Baby vs. Adult. Pros & Cons to buying...

I wish more people would realize the fact it is possible for an older(read 1 year plus) chin to bond very well to new owners. You wouldn't believe the trouble I have if I don't place a chin by 6 months of age. I have 2 very nice beige brothers that I've now had for sale for well over a year...

I don't understand why she hates her bowl...

I have J feeders on a few cages, and my violet girl constantly empties hers. I Just keep an eye on it and try to feed only what she needs for the day. Otherwise is just piles up on the floor of her cage.

    Back Sleepers?

I had a back sleeper once. Generally the more pregnant she got the more I found her on her back. I have never been able to explain it and I've never had another one sleep that way.

How do you store your bedding?

I keep the bags up on a shelf and when I open one I empty what I can fit into a 30 gallon trash can(never used for trash of course). I usually get about half to 2/3 of the bag in there. I find it is much easier to scoop bedding out of that than the bags. What doesn't fit just gets closed bag up...

    Best bedding

I stand corrected, sorry if I caused any confusion. However I still stand by my statement that I have not had any problems with the pine bedding.

    Best bedding

I've used Kiln Dried pine for years without any problems. I've never used Aspen, but isn't it really just a different species of pine tree? I guess I can't see how it would be much different.

    Best Brand of Feed

I feed Mazuri and have never had problems with it. I mostly use it because it is the only one of the big 3 brands(Oxbow, Traditions, Mazuri) I can get locally at my feed store in 25lb bags. A long time ago my herd used to get Chillets from Nutritional Research Associates. While I never really...

    Am I the only one...

A long time ago I advertised a few babies in a local newspaper. I had way more calls than I expected asking if I still had the dogs for sale.

What is the best breeding set up? Runs or Colony?

I do all my breeding in runs or in single pair cages. I've had females escape from their collars before and try to "visit" some of the other girls and the results have not been pretty, so I don't really trust colonies. I also echo RDZC on checking collars often if you go that way. Embedded...

    Death balls

I do not own any balls myself, but whenever new owners ask about using them I always advise against them.

    Pine Bedding

I believe as long as it's Pine it's probably safe. If it wasn't "kiln dried" I don't know how the manufacturer would have dried it. It should look white or slightly yellow. No pink! I also get mine from a farm store, Orscheln Farm and Home. My brands rotate between TLC, and a more local brand...

Announcing Ultimate Poop Throwers vs. Poop cleaner aka Me

I can't say it contains everything, but I made some special tables for my cages. They have a trough about 5 inches wide that runs the length of the table to catch stray poop and shavings. While it doesn't contain everything it seriously reduces the amount of sweeping I have to do. I just vacuum...

    Chinchilla Biting Cage Bars

I've also seen my chins do this, but mostly it's when they change cages. I usually attribute it to exploring.

    Chin baby safe cage?

In order for a cage to be baby safe the wire spacing can be no more than 1" X 1/2". Trust me I have had 6 -7 week old kits move into 1" X 2" wire cage before and I ended up chasing them around the room on more than one occassion. They eventually got put into a different cage. With the style of...

    chin life span

You never know but... I had my oldest pass sometime last year. He was around 15. I always wondered how much time I could hope for and he was a really wonderful guy and excellent breeder.

    Sleeping odd (should I worry?)

Yep sounds completely normal to me. I used to have a mom that slept on her back when she was pregnant. It freaked me out all the time, and eventually I just got used to it. One of her grand daughters now takes after her, but it's only side sleeping right now.

    Missouri Exotics Vet.

Noah's Ark Animal Hospital 1003 North Fairview Road Columbia, MO 65203-4663 (573) 445-1388 They are very good and chin care is priced reasonably. Usually the same price as other pocket pets(Hamsters, Guini Pigs, etc.). They are very nice and know what they are doing around chins.
