It took one of mine 4 months to figure it out. In the beginning he could only run for a minute and had to rest. He can run longer now, but is still no where close to the time the other one can run on it. I guess, just like people they have to increase their fitness level over time.

My chin Charlie has the same problem with splitting and broken off whiskers. He only has it happening on one side. Looks really weird. I noticed that they rub against the doors in their wood house, but I also have second chin that might be the culprit, too. Might be worth looking around the cage...

I have two chinchillas. One loves it and runs like crazy. Sometimes when he is running full speed the other one (still has no clue after 2-3 months) jumps one it, because of that, the first flys off and always has this aahhhh help me look. Charlie runs both ways also.

It had happened to me, too. Called them up and they said tohe same thing - we will send them, no charge. Waited two weeks and they never came. Called again and they finally arrived a week later. This seems to happen to a lot of people, you would think, they learn and would wrap them better...

Have to agree - good looking cage and he knows it. ;) I have the same issue with hay (not quite so much hay), but it's still a pain to clean the fleece. Takes forever to pick it up.
