    Awesome service at Rondaschins.com

Agreed! Ronda's wood is the best, it's my chins' FAVORITE (plus she has the super thin twigs that they adore!) her service is always quick, and excellent! I would recommend her to anyone looking for wood/supplies!

    Skittish Chin

One of my boys, Rigel, has always been very skittish by nature. I don't believe he'll ever be like Pola, who runs to the bars to be pet whenever he sees me, but over 2 years, Rigel has finally gotten to the point he'll let me pet him through the bars if I'm very quiet. Some chins aren't very...

    playpen

I agree with Sandi to never leave your chins unattended, but I borrowed her idea for the Ware pop-up playpen and it is wonderful! My chins loved trying to escape from the old playpen I had, and with this one they cannot get loose! I am always in the room with them, but it's great for cleaning...

What's at the bottom of your cage??

I've begun to do fleece on the top floor over a bass pan, then shavings in the bottom pan of the cage. My boys are piggies and pee all over their fleece! They seem to do it less so with the bottom pan full of shavings though ;)

    Why bedding or liners??

I imagine you could, but as other people stated, it would probably get stinky a lot quicker, not to mention, i can only imagine that chinnies would get urine and such on their fur a lot more since the urine would pool up and they'd be running through it.

    Oxbow Treats

I was also wondering about the Oxbow treats. I've been seeing the ones specific for certain things.. like joints, stomach.. stuff like that. I wondered if they were ok, or if they are yet another treat to steer clear of ;P

    Opinions? Rabbit food for chins

JessiLynn- Thank you for the response =) That does make a lot of sense, and it really clicked for me a while back when I realized vets are not all nutritionists. Also, there are so many diets out there, it's hard to research and analyze each one, especially if their field is not nutrition. I...

    Probiotics?

I used to put probiotic powder on my chins food all the time, and never had any issues. Now I just mainly use it during stressful times. (like when I first brought my boys home, or was doing a food switch) I think it helps them out when certain factors can throw off their gut bacteria (like...

    Covering plastic ramps with fleece?

Your chin can probably easily jump from ledge to ledge without the ramps, but if you're concerned you can put wood leap-n-ledges between them to give him a 'step' between shelves to hop to =)

    Lonely Chin?

I think the chin buddy is a good idea too. One of my chins lost his cage mate a couple years ago, and was very depressed. I thought that perhaps he really missed having a chinchilla friend, so I adopted another male, waited out the quarantine period, went through all the into steps.. and Raider...

At what point do you consider a chinchilla "sick"? Or "sick enough" to be put down?

I'm not sure how much this helps, but for local vets, (even if they are not exotics specialists) Maybe try the Highland Animal Clinic, we used to see Dr. Anne DeGraff for our birds, she actually saved the life of our bird sweetie 9 years ago when she was egg bound. I don't know if she works with...

At what point do you consider a chinchilla "sick"? Or "sick enough" to be put down?

I have so far been fortunate and have not personally had a chinchilla with teeth issues (I did have eye issues with 2 chins though, that caused me to freak out, get x-rays, and I'm thankful that they were just eye-related and not symptoms of tooth issues.) But I have read many stories, and...

    Hay types

I do believe it's beneficial to offer different hay types to evenly wear the teeth. I give my guys 2nd cut timothy, mixed with bluegrass hay, sometimes 1st cut timothy hay, then they get alfalfa and oat hays here and there in small amounts to mix it up. :) Usually, from what I've seen, timothy...

Eye Problem - Infection or Malo?

My guess would be infection/conjunctivitis, but if teeth are a concern, x-rays are good to have done as well. But given the redness, and discharge, that definitely looks like infection/conjunctivitis to me. I just had a chin who had conjunctivitis, and had x-rays done in case, and found out he...

    Need a Veterinarian

Yeah, I would like to bring up a point that was recently brought up in my thread in the diet and nutrition section. Most vets know very little about nutrition, this goes for all types of vets, unless they have specialized in nutrition or have done their own research. I work for a small animal...

    Opinions? Rabbit food for chins

You know, that is a VERY good point, Why hadn't I thought of it that way? I work for a vet part time (he doesn't work with exotics though, thus why I go to a different one for my chins. But he does care for our dogs). We feed all of our clinic cats, and sell Science Diet. Which after doing...

    Opinions? Rabbit food for chins

I just ordered a pound of Manna Pro Sho to see what the chins think :D I found out my feed store does sell that food, and I see the price is $17-20 for 50lbs?? Wow! If they do well on this, that would be great, as opposed to $23 for 10lbs. ;) It's all about what they'll do best on, but I sure...

    Opinions? Rabbit food for chins

As far as Mazuri, I tried getting Raider on Oxbow and he would barely eat pellets, he'd eat some hay, and would eat just enough to keep from starving. I tried for a while, with no change, so we went back to Mazuri. I might be able to get Rigel to switch.. I'll have to try, but Raider does well...

    Need a Veterinarian

If you're willing to drive about an hour, Dr. Ness is excellent! http://www.nessexotic.com/ He's very gentle with my chins, and is very knowledgeable. I would recommend him to anyone in the area looking for a wonderful exotics vet.

    Opinions? Rabbit food for chins

I just wanted to ask a question, and get opinions on advice I was given. When I took Pola to the vets a few weeks ago, I mentioned I was considering a food switch, switching my 2 chins that are on Oxbow to PRCS. Since Sandi can no longer sell Oxbow, I had considered switching to another food I...
