She is already nibbling hay and food pellets in between nursing and running around the cage. It's so cute how quickly they pick up on things.

This is great advise. I had a similar question as I have two females with kits currently.

I usually separate mine for a month or two before putting them back together. It gives mom a chance to be with her kit and relax. My mated pairs are always excited to see each other again after a long break I keep the cages close enough that they can still see one another.

I have had several successful litters over the last 4 years, but recently I had 2 stillborn kits from two separate females. Both of the females had 2 kits and one of each were stillborn. I am wondering what went wrong and if anyone has any advise. The live kits are both healthy and doing well...

How large do you feel a cage needs to be two comfortably accommodate 3 adult chinchillas?

Jenn it sounds like you have a really cool set up with the playpen. I would love to see pics. I have been trying to think of a great chin play are I could build. We usually use our bathroom as a play area (with the toilet shut) it makes for easier clean up and less they can get into/chew on.
