Anyone know of good chin vets in the SoCal area? I thought I had one, but since I never had to use the vet I didn't ask detailed questions. I passed by yesterday and decided to stop and ask if they were indeed chin savvy, and they are not! I'd like to know of a vet or two if an emergency comes up. Thanks!!

Here's a Southern CA vet list I found on the California Chinchillas site. I don't know where those are in relation to LA/Orange County, though.

I have a good one but it's in Santa Barbara

let me know if you want the info...

there are two vets there that see chins, one is kinda experienced and one is very experienced and I highly reccomend her...the only thing is you have to be specific with her about what you want done-she doesn't just go the extra mile on her own.

When you get a chance, can you post the address/phone numbers for those vets too? I go to Santa Clarita and sometimes my parents babysit Cinder (SB isn't *that* far lol). Thanks!

There is a lot of people that use him.

OK, I have heard of him. I called on Sunday and they were closed and I think they are only open a few days a week. He was highly recommended though.

Dr. Ann O'Brien Welton is the one I go to (very nice) but I've also seen Dr. Hillary Conant
(she was a bit nicer and easier to work with but less experienced)

He's closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. I also believe he's only open 1 Saturday a month but you need to call to make sure.

I don't believe they still treat Chinchillas, at least, when I called 2 years ago they didn't. Plus, the area code has changed, so I believe it's old. However, here is one that does:

Dr. Sari Kanfer
Dr. Domotor's Animal House
135 W. Foothill Boulevard
Monrovia, CA 91016
(626) 303-7881

She treats rabbits and chinchillas and she is AWESOME. She treats Hedgies too! The website is

Monrovia is located a few miles east of Pasadena. They are just off the 210 freeway.

He use to work @ my vet hopsital.. (dr greek) great guy! I posted on another oc vet listing question about him. He just opened his own practice. Also dr. Ridder... though I dont know what hopsital he is at youd have to wait till I went to work in 2 days to ask.

Also all creatures care cottage sees anything exotic... though I have never been there or know the docs personally

I got Critical Care from all creatures care cottage. I asked the receptionist if they had any doctors that specialize in chinchillas. Her answer was that both of their doctors see all exotic animals. So I guess the answer was no.

That’s pretty much what all hospitals will say if they don’t have a "specialist"

MY hospital in OC only has specialists. We have IM, Onco, Sx and also physical rehab and some other random docs who do acupuncture and such

Very few mom and pop hospitals have true "exotic specialist" You have to go to school just like a normal human doc to be labeled a specialist for a longer time and you also normaly have to do an internship. I have a technician who use to work @ CC and he knows so much about exotics… and he learned it all there. So I would almost be tempted to go there even though they don’t have a “specialist.”

I am currently looking for a VCA who has an exotic person but I have been receiving the SAME answer you have over and over again.... I almost want to tell them it's not the same thing but oh well no reason to argue I just say thank you and hang up. I think VCA has a hospital who an exotic person in SD I heard but I can’t find it and VCA West LA is just like my specialty hospital and they don’t have any exotic specialists either anymore.

:hmm: let me know if you find a VCA... I want to use my discount lol

Here is one i used a couple of times, for sure not in a big emergency. But she is very knowledgable in small animals, and will listen to you if you have any concerns. She's also there every day (mostly) of the week, and has openings.

One day rosco ate alot of a plastic bag and i took him there after calling several places to get an appointment and they took me right away. So If you're in the area, or dont mind driving at least an hour from where you are at. Here's her info

Point Vicente Animal Hospital 31234 Palos Verdes Dr. West Rancho Palos Verdes, Ca. 90275. 310-265-9511
Dr. Cassie Jones

Also, If you're in the Fresno area, there is a really good emergency vet clinic for small mammals.
Its called

Pet ER
7375 N Palm Bluffs Ave
Fresno, CA 93711, United States

What is "VCA"? My vet referred me to Dr. Jenkins in San Diego when my chin was not doing very well. She said that there are two specialists in Orange County, but she's had unpleasant experiences with them. I did not ask who though. So, Dr. Jenkins probably has more experience with chinchillas. My chin got better, so I did not drive down to see Dr. Jenkins.

VCA is a nation wide vet hopsital group. The hopsitals and partly owned or fully owned by VCA.
If you watch animal planet the hospital they show with the interns is a VCA

Dr. Greek is an amazing vet and the only one in the So Cali area that I trust with my chins. He usually wants appointments but as with any good vet if you have an emergency just call and he'll take you in.

He's also open on Saturdays and if you call on Wed...he usually is the one answering the phone and making appointments. He's a great guy and very knowledgeable about chinchillas.

Sorry I'm replying to this thread so late. I'm not on the forum as much as I used to be, due to my work. I saw this last week but didn't have time to reply then.

The vet I use routinely is Dr. Yoko Tamura, in Capri Pet Plaza. 19582 Ventura Blvd., Tarzana, 818 881-6344. She's really good, and experienced with chinnies.

The really excellent emergency vet I used once is the TLC Pet Medical Center. There's two of them, one in West Hollywood and one in Pasadena. I went to the one in Pasadena. They're open 24/7 and experienced with chins. When Weeko fell, my hubby and I took her in. They did body x-rays quickly, with no meds or anesthesia, and got great films! The doc was really great! (Google TLC Medical Center for the location you want, and for the address and phone number.)

Maybe these won't be such a drive for you from Orange County. ;)

I'd love it if I could find a vet for Yo-Yo in Ventura but I doubt there's a chinchilla specialist here. Anyone know of one in Oxnard or Camraillo? I can take her on the bus to Santa Barbara if we have to take that long of a trip but I'd rather find someone closer.

The problem is we don't have a car only a motorcycle and well she isn't going on the motorcycle. So I'll have to find a vet I can get to by bus or close enough to afford a cab.

Thank you for posting this. I did not want to drive to the OC when I live in Woodland Hills aka The Valley. I had located a vet before I picked up Shelly but when I drove by it was GROSS.
