A friend of mine has an apple tree and offered to give me some branches. She is wondering if there are any restrictions to when to cut the branches off? I didn't think so, but I don't know much about wood. She asked:

I don't know when I can cut them off though. Can you cut branches off in the winter or do you have to wait until spring?

Thanks for the help! :)

Does this apply to any wood? I have a Magnolia tree that I was wanting to cut some branches off of. When I broke a branch off it seemed really dry. I was assuming it was because it was Winter.

Spring is the best (really only) time to safely trim trees without killing them.

You want to cut branches before the tree wakes up. Also, I read from a member here that the dormant branches are best to give to your chin...but I can't quite recall the reasoning behind that.
