I found it helpful to keep a radio on in her room, to help desensitize her to noises. I've been lucky, as she became friendly pretty quickly, but here we are almost 10 months later, and she still is very creeped out be being picked up or held.

If you have wooden guards around the bottom of the cage, they also help keep the fleece in place, assuming the fleece is slightly larger than the plastic pans.

I have had a glass baking dish with pine shavings in the cage for the last five months. At first she peed everywhere on the fleece, and the cage would get smelly rather quickly, but now that she's getting older, 7 months, it seems that she uses the pan more and the fleece doesn't need changing...

The playpen was a good solution for us as well. I attach it around the front of her cage and I bought two extra sets of panels for it, so really it can be as big as the room if I want it to be. Makes it much easier knowing i don't have to worry about her chewing the furniture, door or baseboards.
