    bird cage into chin cage

I actually had that cage for a very short amount of time, and the bar spacing was too far for my full grown girl. It's the ones on the front under the door that are a problem. They are way over 1 inch, and my girl ended up escaping while I was watching her, thank goodness. Look at the ad's third...

Some of my other critters (Tarantula + Fish Tank)

Yeah, buying livestock from PETCO is a bad idea. Heard lots of horror stories from folks crashing their tanks from their stock. I have a 45 bow front reef with 4 green chromis, an blue tang (to be rehomed when she gets too big), and a clownfish. We've had a bunch of jumpers, including the other...

    Pet stores

Our PETCO here will intentionally not hire individuals with experience with pets. They want people they can teach their care policies, whether they are right or wrong. Many of them don't know about cycling fishtanks, or anything about chinchillas temperature requirements or really anything...

    Freckled Ears..

My hetero beiges were about a year old when I got them, and they had some freckles. Now at about 4 years, one's ears are nearly black with freckles, and the other has very few in comparison. Each chin is different.

    Alternatives to hardware cloth

So I moved Rocky into his an FN 142 yesterday, and today I am preparing to open the top level of Leeloo and Eevee's 142 (where Rocky was previously housed). Eevee is almost two months old now, and while she is a large kit, I don't want to risk her squeezing out of the cage. The bottom level...

What are your chin's crazy nicknames

Eevee, my 7 week old homo beige, always gets called 'little creampuff' by my whole family. :-) Her mom and dad don't really have nicknames.

Do you prefer sweet or smart chins?

I like sweet chins... I have a super smart girl that is pretty antisocial, and a super sweet boy who is not as smart. But nothing beats that little guy running to the front of the cage, begging for scritchies and attention. :-) Watching the girl navigate a room (she always starts by trying to...

    Types of wood for shelves

You can also use poplar (I can't find KD pine that is not 'select' in my area, which makes it more expensive than poplar).

    Why Fleece?

Fleece is popular because it doesn't have regular thread like cotton, which means it won't block chinchillas digestive tract (in small doses, of course).

    FN newbie questions

    1. Many users here use fleece cage liners. I sewed my own, but many people sell them custom for FN cages. You just vacuum them and wash them once a week (that number will vary with the chinchilla, though). Or KD pine shavings. 2. If you are able to take off the side panel and zip tie the two...

    Newbie Question!

Buddha is an awesome name for a chin, btw! Welcome!

    Cage suggestions?

My FN's plastic pans a covered in fleece, and they don't chew them. :-)

At what age can a baby chin use a whole FN142?

The cage has an entire large level in the middle with a cutout in the corner, and the shelves will be placed about 8 inches from each level, so there is no need for a hammock in the middle. She won't be able to fall more than 8 inches. It's not like she could fall the full 48 inches.

    Insanity Workout

I did 60 days of p90x, and couldn't make it through the first day of Insanity! But my resting heart rate is already 110, so it was just too much for my little self. :-) Congrats for getting through a week! I would consider trying again, but I got so sick the first time...

    Chin Fur

Make sure you are using dust and not actual sand. Tufts of fur might be little fur-slips (chinnies shed clumps of fur to escape predators or grabby owners). Maybe your girls play a little rough, and that leaves some fur-slips in their coats. Just a thought!
