i want to make my cage more exciting for my two chinchillas! well my cage is about 3ft. tall 3ft. wide, i have a hammock, chew toys, a wooden shelter, three levels, a tunnel. i dont know what else to get them! i want to give them a great expeirence, i also want to get them a cage with a roof on it so i can take them out side, they love it out there, i just dont know how much they would cost..any ideas to spice up their living space? :) thanks!

Do not under any circumstances take your chins outside in the heat. They will have a heat stroke and die. It might be ok in the cooler months below 75 and don't let them get rained on or be outside during humid days. They could get a fungus that is quite honestly hell to get rid of. If you have any more questions about this stuff or other questions feel free to ask. This is usually a pretty friendly forum. Otherwise to answer your question if you look in the classified section there are a ton of sellers on here that have lots of great stuff for totally decking out a cage that I'm sure your chins will love. There is a sticky with a list of all the suppliers that are active members on here. Have fun with it! If you don't want to buy it there are also a lot of great ideas for making your own stuff for them in the housing section. Also make sure you find out what is safe and what isn't. Some things just aren't for chins like certain woods. Use your imagination and again have fun with it. You may know all of this info already I just wanted to let you know in case you didn't and good luck!

I looove looking at all these cages...but what I love even more is the angry little chinnie faces wondering why its photography time instead of play time!

Newly decorated home and the "yard":

(Sorry for the large images but smaller ones just wouldn't be any use!)

A branch mess like this probably isn't the most aesthetic solution - but the girls seem to be very pleased and that's all that really matters! :))

There's more to come: I'll make more "suspension bridges" to safely fill the upper part of the cage - it still seems to be quite empty.

I'm really liking these large branches in the cages - where do you all get them? On your property and harvesting yourselves, or do you buy them?

Thank you for your nice comments! Actually, I've been asked a lot where I do get the branches. I haven't bought any of them - that would be unnecessary since almost 80 percent of Finland's surface area is dense forest. :)) So, these branches are mostly collected from forests, without harming any living trees, of course! For example, naturally they have to cut down all saplings near power lines so the growing trees wouldn't damage the lines; even if most of the cut wood is collected away, you can always find perfect branches and small tree trunks to take home. And if I don't take them, elks (or do you prefer to call them moose ;))) and brown hares will eat them right away!

Also, my parents have a nice little country cottage and a small forest lot, too. When they make firewood, they remember to save some good branches for Ode and Nana.

The crabapple tree branches (and those delicious twigs!) I get mostly from my mother-in-law's tree - it has to be cut a lot every spring or it takes over her lawn! In Finland we don't use toxic pesticides in our gardens so it's safe.

So the branches don't need to be boiled or baked or anything?

Maybe just scrubbing the branches and sun drying are enough?

Finally, my FN142.. okay so i just want to let you know so you don't worry, this was put up in my bedroom so the cage does not sit in front of the air conditioner or heater.

I still have to fine tune it [put a few more shelves in, water bottle, have to order bottom piece..etc.], but here is a picture. I have some shelves behind the long hammocks, I put them in [the hammocks] incase someone falls [just hope they don't get in the way of jumping.

If anyone thinks it's unsafe for any reason, please let me know. You guys know how I worry about these guys.

Thanks,
Jean

That's right - washing with a brush and hot water is perfect. Drying time depends on size of a branch but it'll be more like months than weeks. A good way to fasten the drying process is to place the branches on highest sauna seat while the stove is heating. ;))

Wow these are all really amazing cages! What spoiled chins! Here is my melamine cage. Lots of poop, but it was before a cage clean. The blue food bowl has been replaced by a nice metal one in the thir pic, and the house was replaced by a wood house in the other two.

I get a chance to show off the nice big cage that my hubby and I built a few months back. The smaller cage was connected but it's separated at the moment b/c my top dog Pip decided he wanted hot little Feeney all to himself and started to harass Oscar and Max, so the Grey Boys are housed in it. They all come out together for playtime though and I get to design another cage for the Grey Boys soon which should be fun.

^^ Evil Pip

lol...dont take this the wrong way but your cage puts your tv to shame..thats all i could think of the whole time i was looking at your pics lol

Hey, I love my TV even if it is on the smaller side, heh.

I'm not sure if I updated that my Grey Boys got an addition so I'll post a pic of that. Basically it's a box with a door and some apple branches, a few ledges and there is an opening for them to access to new addition.

Also, I've gone a different route this time with a cage for my new chin Carlos b/c my husband said straight off that he didn't want to build another cage right now b/c he wanted to do house fix ups so I had one custom made from Grandview Commercial Rabbitry in southern Ontario. It arrived last Monday and it's been put together with three shelves so far and hopefully it will be finished tomorrow when I can get out and get more wood. I kinda like that the shelves are movable and that I can add stuff easily to it by using screws and wing nuts etc. The cage is 5' high, 30" wide by 24" deep with a 4" pullout pan for easy cleaning. I'll post some new pics when we get it all finished.

Well, I haven't gotten my chinchilla boy yet, but I've got his cage all set up (except food and toys) so I figured I'd show everyone while it was clean of poo and hay!

It's no FN, but I really like it, I had it built by Four J's Plantation for $90. And my mom and I made liners for it, and the green tube on the side, and the tube on the bottom.

Jim makes FANTASTIC cages! I absolutely love the way they're made and I've admired them since I first saw them when I picked up my Hank from them. I definitely recommend their cages, and their shipping prices are very reasonable since they ship via Greyhound.

Okay, here's the skeleton cage with the basic shelves in but of course I need to add all the little accessories as well as the new Chin Spin will go at the bottom right side. I'm really liking it so far and I love how easy it is to position things with those screws/wing nuts etc. Now I just need to get those legs/wheels on and get it out of my living room and we're in business.

I am in love with the 4 J's Plantation cages as well. If I ever go down to just one chinchilla (like that's going to ever happen :p) I would purchase one of those in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I absolutely adore it. It's like a wood cage and one of just the wire cages combined, so its easy to add things on and it doesn't look like a torture chamber! (thats always a plus)
And I really loved the price, four shelfs (shelves?) included in the 90 bucks. The only problem I had was going to the greyhound station, its scary here in indy...
And Jim is just a great guy, too!
