Paul was grooming her and asked me how her bump looked..... what is this space at her cone?? Its right where the black spot was last time, is that her uterus?

Back story is she has a large mass on her back side, under belly that the vet 2 weeks ago felt was a fatty tumor or a hernia. She checked and did needle draw to rule out fluids or abcess. So we checked it and saw her open under her cone???? What is that?

I'm not spreading it. So is this something that should be addressed by the vet? I'm assuming the "mass" is too large and keeping her open.

Here is the picture from when I got her, I circled the mass. It isnt this well defined when she is sitting, it just looks like her but is dragging.

She is 11. Sadly yes, she was bred, and I fear back to back. The girl I got her from said she hasnt been bred in a few years. Im concerned this mass is causing this, and I dont want her to stay like that if its going to give her an infection

Her vagina (the opening beneath her cone) looks fine, but that mass below the tail is abnormal. You should not only have it looked at by a competent vet, but if they don't want to go into surgery immediately the tissue at least needs biopsied. How long has it been like this?

I am not sure how long the mass has been there. Ive only had her a couple weeks and she was at the vet by the 3rd day I had her. The opening, I have not a clue. It wasnt like that before, but there was a mark there, like it had been or a spot?

Her vagina, which you keep calling "the opening" is not the problem, the problem is that large mass that has not been identified by a competent vet with a biopsy.

Cross posting

I had to rush Momma off to the vet tonight with bloat symptoms.... well thats what she has, and pretty bad too.... Her mass is indeed a herniated intestine. The vet and I agree she is too old for surgery but Paul wants to try and see if we can get her back to comfortable. So she is on metacam and simethicone until the gas is gone.

The vet said her bloat will probably be reoccurring since it is a hernia of the intestine. She said we take excellent care of our babies and she is happy people like us are around for them when others discard them.

So that is where we are at. 107 out today and she had to be taken outside.... poor girl was HOT on top of it all!!!

Kiltbunny I am capable of answering questions... If given time to see them. Momma is doing well today since the bloat incident which was 2 days ago now. She seems back to herself. There is no cancer, it is just intestine which the vet did an x ray and it is indeed just intestine.

She loves her simethicone and critical care. Shes a good patient lol!! Her fur mats that she came with are all but out of her fur as well.

Does the vet think herniated intestines is a comfortable way for her to live? Any vet I've ever spoken to lists that as a serious medical condition. It's obviously a condition that's not getting better either considering that the "mass" where the intestines are has grown larger since you got this girl.

She doesn't feel it is causing her pain which is obvious when you see her run around. I'm not completely new to chins nor am I an idiot and would not let her suffer. The vet said surgery could be done to try to put it back but she would have to go to Philadelphia to have the specialist do it. She's 11. I'm not putting her through a surgery that she may not make it through.

I've seen chinchillas running around like nothing is wrong when they are in serious pain. Knowing chins as you do, I'd expect you to know that they are very good at hiding pain.

My apologies if I can't wrap my mind around the idea of herniated intestines being comfortable. Not to mention bloat is extremely painful and the vet said she believes it will be a reoccurring thing because of the herniated intestines. To me, that does not spell quality of life.

I agree with Tabitha, that cannot be comfortable at all! Another thing to think about is the risk of the intestines becoming strangulated if the hernia is not repaired. That can kill her and is too big a risk for me to take that kind of chance, regardless of her age.
