I understand your concern about stressing her, but the risks of not taking her outweigh the risks of stress in this case.

Keep us posted. We will be worrying with you. ;)

When do you think she was bred? I can feel a pregnancy in my chins as early as 5 weeks. By then the sac is about the size of a quarter (maybe a little smaller) and firm. I'm shocked the vet can't tell. That's just ridiculous.

Ultrasounds are safe. They really don't need to be sedated for that if you have a calm girl. Usagi had one done without sedation and sat in my hands for 20 mins. It wouldn't be hard to stick a probe on her belly for 2 secs. Up here the cost of an ultrasound at hubby's work is $300.

I'm going to call some places today and see about getting an ultrasound. I'll probably try taking her somewhere else, I'm just so afraid of stressing her out. Taking her the other day and getting the xray was traumatizing. Plus I'm in eastern PA, and it's COLD here. Poor girl...

You'll be fine. It's supposed to be in the 40's tomorrow, and moving a chin from the house to the car is no big deal. Get her to an experienced vet. If you're around Lancaster area, Smoketown Vet Clinic's Bridgeport office is pretty decent, and we also have Newbolton, and U. Penn.

You've got an awesome vet with chinchilla experience about 10 miles from you (based on plugging the two towns into yahoo maps).

Angie would definitely be my vet if I lived within 2 hours of her office.

Hi everyone. Just a little update. I took her to a new vet. They took more xrays and said they're pretty sure she is pregnant. They told me to wait and monitor her closely. I was like... ugh, still no answers!?? This past weekend I made a trip to the Ryerson's (and added 7 new chinnie's to my family!) and talked to them about her. They said the best thing to do is just wait it out, and they think she is pregnant. It makes me uneasy. I've been giving her the Ryerson's supplement daily, and she seems to be doing okay. She moves around like normal, and I think she even gained a little weight other than in the belly area. So what do you guys think? Should I just do what the Ryerson's said, or try the specialist in, I think, Lancaster or Angie Keffer, who was listed above? I need some advice...

What kind of vets are you taking her to? "Pretty sure she's pregnant" is not a diagnosis. You were given the name of a good vet, why did you not use her instead of whoever you went to? What kind of x-ray was done, an ultrasound? Angie would not give you a diagnosis of "she might, maybe, possibly be pregnant, but I don't know."

Did you drag her to Ryerson's too? Because as good as Ryerson's are, I don't think they can palpate long distance, and if you did take her and she's already stressed out, that trip probably didn't do her a lot of good.

No, I didn't bring her along to the Ryerson's. I just described to them what was happening. And the first vet I took her to was an emergency vet. The second was the vet I normally take my chins to, and they're usually really good.

tunes - She was 560 g shortly after giving birth before. I (irresponsibly) had not weighed her more recently, but she was much more before her first pregnancy. I assume this is part of the problem. She was not back up to a healthy weight before getting pregnant again. My estimated time of conception is about 2 months after, shortly after I removed her kits. This is a completely unexpected pregnancy. She was in a run, and the hole had a metal wire cover over it, which she somehow got off. Thankfully she was wearing a collar, but the male got to her and must have gotten her pregnant in that one night.

chinclub - her kits were weaned in mid/late october.

menagerie - I did have an xray done. It didn't show anything, and the vet said that would be because she isn't far enough along. The xray only shows if the bones have begun to mineralize. I asked about an ultrasound, but he said he did not recommend it.

There seems to be some confusion from your posts - I have highlighted the areas which are of concern.

You weaned her first lot of kits in mid/late October & the male got to her then - so she'd be due 2nd Feb (mated 15th Oct) - 18th Feb (mated 31st Oct).
Taking those dates into consideration the kits would be 11-14 weeks which is more than developed enough to feel (if one is experienced and gentle enough) and certainly to see on X-ray. I'd be looking for a new vet!

What was the weight of this female before her first litter?
What does she weigh now/today?

I am just going to say it. I am not sure you should have added to your herd since you seem ill equipt to deal with issues you have already have. I wish you luck with her but I really think you should pull her from breeding if she pulls through this

Edited to add.
I know I sounded Harsh but If you are going to breed before you expand your herd to a large size you really do need to get a little more in order. You often seem confused. It is great that you are learning and asking questions but I am afraid you will be overwheloming yourself very soon as it seems you have a lot going on.

Did you suggest to them my theory about the swollen milk gland considering they can't seem to see the kits in x-ray?

My advice is pretty much the same as everyone elses. Get a new vet! Don't keep wasting money and stressing out your chins taking them to a vet that doesn't know anything. I'm in PA too, and I go to Robinson Animal Hospital. I think Angie Keffer was mentioned before. She really is great.

Let us know what happens! I hope your chinnie will be okay.
