We wanted to chin-proof a particular play area in our new home. No matter how many toys they have to chew when they are out to play, they are still too interested in trying to chew on baseboards, cabinets, furniture, etc.

Erick suggested that we take a few boards of MDF (medium density fiber board) and line them up around the walls as a chin-shield, but I know they are going to chew on them. Is MDF safe for them to chew or would it be toxic? Of course, I am not planning on putting it in their cage or anything, but I do not want to expose them to even a little nibble of something that could be dangerous.

Any thoughts or possible substitutions?

It is not safe for them to chew. Not only can you not guarantee what materials are used to make the board (anything from pine to glass), but the binding material is an irritant.

That said, I use MDF to hold up my runs because it is sturdy and cheap, but not in any way that chins can get to it.

I know a lot of people who use the flat rate priority mail boxes from the post office. They are free, safe to chew, and also put that barrier in place.
