The vet in Altoona, PA is only 43 minutes from Smithmill, Pa, in case you want to try and call them. And the Pleasant Valley Animal Hospital is only 45 minutes away from Smithmill, Pa. The Lakemont Veterinary Clinic is also 45 minutes away from you.
I would give one of these vets a call in the morning and see about getting your chinny into see them, asap.

I really hope u found a new vet! To me its crazy it took you this long but thats just me and its only 25 bucks a visit for me in Houston not sure how much yall pay but still whats 100 bucks for a leg!!! If she is still dragging it then its obviously has a bigger problem then just swelling and pain but then again my experiences in small animals is they have a incredible turn around on injuries with little care as long as its the right care

she eating and drinking but after she gets a drink she lays back down she is still draging it behind her im gona call the vet a soon as i put my son on the bus and ask about getting the outher meds

talked to vet she said she wouldn't give her something that would hurt her. do they know about it? she thinks the nerve damage might be to bad and she might never use it again.
:(

So you went back and told the vet what everyone on here said and that was the response?! My vets are always open to feedback and more than willing to discuss my concerns. When I question a medication, they give me a detailed breakdown of why they chose the meds they chose. You need to see a different vet asap. Your chin is in pain AND in danger of losing a leg (if it's not too late already). Time is of the essence. Call around to the other vets and find a way to do the right thing.

Vets near you... Call them all!

I'm sooo sorry you and your chin is out of reach from a 2nd opinion I hope quick recovery and no permanent damage in the future, yall will be in my thoughts

She may not knowingly give her something that would hurt her...But if she has no clue what is safe for chinchillas then it can and will happen. It really makes me angry when people are so bullheaded. If she is not open to other peoples feedback and she is dealing with animals lives then she needs a new line of work.

You need to find a new vet right away. People are trying to help you. You can get on the computer yourself and look as well. You really should have had knowledge of a vet before hand.

It is frustrating me you are letting this go on so long...If someone had a dog that got cough up in barb wire he has and open cut up leg and not using it...you take him to the vet...and the vet did not treat the sores would you go back to that vet??? Would you find a second opinion... IT is the same thing just on smaller scales... :banghead:

If need be call a chinchilla rescue in your area ask them what vet they use. Let them know what it going on they surly have a vet they go too.

Here are 12 vets listed for PA that see chinchillas. One of them HAS to be within driving distance from you even if you drive a good hour or more.

If there is not proper circulation for this leg, she is going to loose it. As for the vet you have already seen, I have been told of many vets that are not specialist in chins give meds that are not safe for them or the best one to give for the condition and they will never admit it. So her response to you does not surprise me.

Dr. Donato is my vet. The man's amazing, but I think he's probably a bit far (4 hour drive).
Pittsburgh and Lebanon are the two closest to her at 2-3 hours away. The rest are 3-4 hours if you drive the speed limit.

I would find a new vet immediately, as the others said. If I'd stuck with the vet I found first, instead of moving on to Dr Herron, Caboose would be dead. Even if they're not a chinchilla specialist, someone who knows small animals, has worked with chins before, etc, and is willing to learn and listen is better than nothing.

i called my vet that sees my dogs and she gave me a number for a vet in state collage im gona try them

Why would you not just travel the 2 hours? It has to be better then finding your girl had chewed off her leg or even dead.

You are having people help you But you refuse to listen to anyone. Why even bother posting then?

We can only do so much on the net, the owner needs to step up, get on the phone and get this chin to a chinchilla knowlegable vet, there is no more advice avaliable, you cannot self-vet this anymore.

im trying im gona call them in the morn and see if they know more about chins im on a budgit right now and am doing every thing i can to help her

You honestly can only help her by getting her to a vet that knows chins, we have no more advice until that happens, the forum can only do so much.

: ( Oy, I wish you the best of luck with all of this with your little one
