Eating wood shavings

I just finished using my bag of shavings and have bought my chinchilla a new bag of Great Choice Aspen Wood Shavings, however, he seems to be pigging out (eating) it a lot, are there any risks or is it perfectly normal?

Nibbling on shavings is perfectly normal. Have you used aspen before? And what is "a lot?"

thanks! no actually, i usually use kinele dried pine

Nope! Perfectly normal. My chins go crazy when I change shavings - it's like a special "treat".

We use shredded aspen bedding and ours will nibble on it too. We have a 6 month old that has a wooden house that he has almost devoured.

YES! My chins always nibble as soon as I change the shavings. They love it.. lol

thanks guys! another quick question, how long does hay usually last?

If the hay is dry and kept in a cool, ventilated and dry area and free of mold, I would keep it for about a year as long as the chins are still eating it.
