Hi Guys
I noticed a week ago a big lump under my boy Jerry's chin. Obviously the first thought was abscess so I took him to the vets.
The vet said to just give him Baytril and to drain it everyday, and he should go back to normal. He weighed 420grams.
So throughout the week I drained the abscess (disguisting yellow hard and liquid) every single night and banned him from dustbaths.
Yesterday I noticed his eye had gotten blue in the centre, and I was worried he might have gone blind in that eye. I took him back to the vets who said hes probably gone blind due to malloclusion. I argued that he was only one and that the abscess had probably spread. As usual they didn't take any notice of my opinion. He is now 370grams.
Today there is white liquid (probably puss) coming out from the centre of his eye. I have also noticed one of his bottom teeth has come off :(
I don't know what to do. I called the vet who has put him down for a dental xray check tomorrow. It doesn't look good :(

I really want him to pull through - please tell me if you have seen this before?
Thanks

(P.S I only put graphic because I was worried it might not be suitable for everyone to see)

When my rescues I adopted had abcess, they vet and I drained it all out in the office. Gave them baytril and injections to make sure the treatment is agressif enough as a treatment, my guys where not as a severe case as your little one.

Change vets...this one is useless for your chin, If he cannot see how serious your little guys situation is he must of gotten his license to practice from a box of Cracker Jacks. Sorry for being unpleasant about him, but it could be worst since I containing myself.

Your little guy needs agressif treatment. Baytril is excellent but in situations like this, he needs reinforcements. Yesterday would be a good day for an appointement. Hope you find a knowledgeable one.

Good luck to you both and I hope he pulls thru for you.
Positive thought for you both.

thank you for your reply
The vet is an exotic vet, the only thing is the exotic specialist is on maternity leave
I am also holding back - I am very annoyed and upset that it has gotten to this.

argh!! maybe you can suggest him to get in touch with her for feed back.
Unless he/she feels that might bruise the ego.
This is a very serious situation here.

Is he eating, drinking and all.

I am sorry I must step out for work, but I do hope someone chimes in for you.

This is me, but I definitely would strongly suggest the phone call .

I should probably do that - I don't care if it bruises their ego to be honest.
He is trying to eat - he can only lick up crumbs I have made for him. I also syringe feed him twice a day his pellet mix and oxbow critical care.

Well he has the will to survive. Feed him as often as you can until he will not take in anymore.
But he needs the help.

He has lost alot of weight, is there any one else who can help with a veterinary surgeon in your area? The idea to let the abscess out is a principle of surgical management for abscesses but the pus may build up in areas where it isn't draining out. Did they determine the primary site of infection? things look terribly serious. The infection seems to be tracking up from the wound site despite the draining of the wound.

Perhaps a Vet surgeon with experience of dentistry in chinchillas/rodents can provide advice and intervention i.e. removal of dead bone and tissue so it can heal up properly, and to see where the infection resides.

Hope he keeps up the hand feeding intake, poor chinny

Has this chin had a set of dental x-rays? The only way a dental abscess has any possibility of going away is removal of the infection source, debride the area of dead tissue and infection by a flap surgery, antibiotic beads, a drain, flagyl and baytril together-baytril does squat for dental infections since most include both anerobic and aerobic which you need two antibiotics to treat. That said, if this is caused by what I suspect the chin NEEDS ASAP dental x-rays, it looks to me like tooth elongation that has breached bone into the eye socket and out the jaw bone. I have been here and done this, the outcome I am sad to say is very poor.

I agree with Dawn, this chin is in severe pain, unable to eat and apparently is loosing teeth?

Malo doesn't care about age. This chin needs a competent vet immediately, pain meds, and xrays to see what is really going on. Imagine someone drilling slowly into your eye ball and through your jaw... this is a very real possibility of what is happening to this chin.

I'm with Dawn too. I would be really concerned that the tooth has gone beyond the bone. So very painful. Get a set of dental films and let us know what you find.

I am so sorry that your little guy and you are going through this. It broke my heart. I sincerely hope that you are able to find a competent vet that can do something to alleviate this poor baby's suffering one way or another. Keeping my fingers crossed for you both and you are in my thoughts and prayers as well....

Hi Guys
He had his xrays today and it seems his left incisor was completely broken and fragments of bone were around his jaw area. They also had loads of puss around (now removed). No maloclusion issues either - apparently the mark on his right eye was just an ulcer (gone now :)).
The vets said I could either put him to sleep or go through surgery - so I decided surgery since he was still feeding (only mush) and running around still. Unlike my other chinchillas I have put to sleep I wanted him to have this chance.

So...The vet removed his left incisor completely and warned me the abscess will probably come back :( I've been given loads of meds for him which Im not sure about on two of them (will like advice please!).
Total cost was £400  but my babies worth it

Here are his medicines I only know about Metacam and Baytril.

Metacam 0.1ml
Baytril 0.07ml
Ranitidine
Emeprid
Fucithalmic (twice a day cream for eye)

Does anyone know about Emeprid and Ranitidine?
Thanks

First of all, thats wonderful that you've opted to give your chinchilla every treatment you can afford, :)

Both Emeprid and Ranitidine are pro-kinetics that help the chinnies gut to move along and prevent GI stasis. Ranitidine is not purely a pro-kinetic, humans for example take it to counter gastritis. I think the same is true for Emeprid, but they both work wonders as pro-kinetics.

Stasis is commonly encountered post-surgically, in chins with pain, chins who don't feed for any reason, and antibiotic usage. Baytril has been known to put chins off their food sometimes, so its important you hand feed him if he isnt eating.

It helps to give them regular feeds - you mentioned he does take his feed as mush, has the vet offered any Oxbow Critical care?

How is he doing and hope you're fine too.

Thank you for replying :)
Yes the vet has given him some critical care too.
Im trying to feed him four times a day as he cannot feed himself at the moment. I really do not want to lose him :(

Hes doing okay in mood and running around, dustbathing etc just not eating or looking healthly. Hes weighing 390grams. Can't seem to put any weight on him.

Give him time for the weight gain...
Happy for the news... I have confidence he will do good and not have any infection again once everything is resolved.
