    Unsure after vet visit

George (up till now a perfectly healthy 3 1/2 year old) was on Baytril for 9 days for a URI. He went off his pellets, though did continue eating some hay, produced normal looking poop but very, very few of them. His belly feels swollen to me - kind of hard to tell because he's a good sized...

    Gas Bloat Stasis Obstruction

Can you help me understand the differences in between gas, bloat, stasis & obstruction? How are they different, if at all, in symptoms? What are the urgencies of these conditions? When a chin is having one of these conditions, what should he eat? If he is a chin that normally gets...

    Coughing

We have been very fortunate with regard to the health of our chins for these three years we've had them. Now two chins with problems at once - first was Delilah - long story short, she had a tooth that was flat on the top like normal, but spurred, growing into the side of her cheeck. She has...

    Natural habitat brought indoors?

Grumpie loves to explore our front yard on beautiful days like today. She walks in the grass, pushes her way through the hostas and digs in the sand. Today she was actually rolling around in the sand. Cutest thing I've ever seen. (Don't worry, my husband & I supervised her the entire time.)...

    Long term pain relief?

A 7-year old fur-chewing peg leg female came to me this past fall. By peg leg, I mean that she is missing 2/3 of one back foot, so she only has a little stump/heel. She had been chewed all over and we think some of it may have been done by a previous cagemate. Her fur has now filled in...

    Raisins

I would like to get more educated about raisins. I have only had my chins for two years and it seems now, more than ever, raisins are strongly discouraged. What are the specific reasons for this? Have some of you previously used raisins within reason, but have now discontinued the practice...

    Rabbit - dirty bottom solution?

We have 11 indoor spayed/neutered rabbits. Flopsi, a 5-year old mini lop, has had problems with a dirty bottom off and on for the last couple of years. We have to bathe her backend periodically because urine & feces collect into a big clump. It's pretty gross. We do not feed her any wet...

    Pedigree question

How are pedigrees established? If you start with non-pedigreed animals, can you ever establish a pedigree for your line? Is this something that can be accomplished over a period of generations? Are vet visits required to certify that an animal carry genetic problems?

    Mastitis

A set of trips will be 10 weeks old tomorrow. On Monday, we moved the kits to a separate cage to give mom a break. We had not seen any nursing lately. Apparently that's not the case, as last night we noticed that the mom has mastitis. I applied a warm compress and we put one of the kits back...
