I feel like I just need to say this. I am a very impatient person. Hahaha. I just got a job last Monday and will be starting next Tuesday. I am 17 years old. And when I got the job, my dad told me I was allowed to get a chinchilla as long as I paid for it, since I've been wanting one for a very long time. So it's been a week since this was promised, and I've already started to try to get everything in order. I'm even trying to find my perfect chin, even though i have about a month until I can have the money to get one. But I'm looking anyway. And I'm really impatient and really wanting to just get a chin now, even though I can't! Does anyone else have trouble waiting on getting a new chin/waiting for the right time? It's kind of stressful. Hahaha. I just needed to get this out to people who will hopefullt somewhat understand!

;) You've got a piece of my story. The timing was two weeks and my husband caved. He couldn't stand how depressed I was and believed a new chin would help. Not long after that Sonic cam home with us, too. I love them both and am still mourning Chipper.

Patience may be a virtue, but I couldn't find the line to get some. Still, it takes time to do everything. Enjoy the excitement.

I currently think the only good part about waiting is that I'm getting to spend all this time researching everything I need to know! Haha. Plus I've been able to shop around and find the perfect cage along with other supplies!

I know how you feel, I can be very impatient when I'm excited for something. When I was looking for a new cage for my girl, I must of gotten 3 hours a sleep for the 3 days I was looking. Needles to say, I got way to impatient and much to tired to stay up another night so I ordered the cage that was 50 dollars cheaper then the rest. I wish I waited, but my girl loves her new cage!

Now I'm impatiently waiting for my mom to let me order from Christine, since I'm not the one with a credit card lol! Sleepless nights are ahead!

It must be killer waiting for the perfect chin to come! Take your time though, it won't fall on your lap (though that would be nice lol).

Can I ask where you got a job at? I'm 16 and will hopefully get my permit soon and job would be nice ;) Have fun on your first day next week!

I got my job at Chickfila. Hired on the spot, actually! :)
And it is killer! I don't know which is worse, waiting for your parents to get you something or being told you have to get the money yourself. Haha. (I'm 17, so I totally understand that problem!)

Ah Chickfila! I've only been there once, it was funny because I ran into my old gym teacher lol not the place I was expecting to see him! Grats on getting hired on the spot!

Haha I know, it's even worse when you have to wait for someone else! :p

I think it is excellent that you're doing research and saving up for your chin. Chinchillas can get sick and need vet care, which can cost $100's of dollars at a time. Have you talked to your dad about helping to pay for this if an emergency comes up?

Well if it makes you feel better I've been wanting one since I was in middle school. I am nearly 30 years old now and waiting 3-4 more years to get a house then chinchilla lol.

I haven't seen her but I can look!
And I haven't talked to my parents about that, but I know that they would help me pay for a vet visit in an emergency if I didn't have the money.
And that's a really long time to wait for a chin!

Don't assume the parents will help, ask first if they would front you the money to pay for a vet visit, get you there and back and any follow up visits and you would pay them back in time and money. We have had members assume and be crushed when the parents said no.

Waiting sometimes isn't such a bad thing either, you get a chance to research, plan, allow time to decide if you really want to do this, and decide is now the right time? Or will a few years from now be better? Chinchillas live a very long time, so its a long term commitment to make. I know of several I wish had waited as they rehomed their animals when they went off to college, or graduated college. Once their lives settled down, they were ready.

Kalandra's got a point. I had budgies while I was in college, or more accurately, my parents had budgies while I was in college. I was lucky they were willing to feed my birds during the week and that I was close enough to come home on weekends to clean the cage that first year because I couldn't take them with me. My roommate and dormmates didn't want the noise, and dorm rules wouldn't have allowed me to keep a chin. I switched to community college and lived at home up to graduation, so their care was back on me. If your family is good with keeping the chin while you're away then be sure you share your research so they know what to do while the chin is in their care. Or consider a local college that you can commute to each day so you're not really away. Assuming you go to college.

Vacations are the same way. Someone needs to care for your chin or it needs to go with you and you have to plan its environment from the moment you take it out of its home cage to the moment you get it back. Just thought I'd throw that in there too, since you seem to be a good planner. ;)

I'm planning on going to college where I live, so I can live at home or get an apartment that will allow me to have a chin. And I've also been thinking about my plans for vacation too! Thanks for the advice!

I have to agree with others waiting is not a bad thing...lol My first chinchilla actually was my 16yr old son's and I had no idea he was getting one (because of miscommunication between my husband and I he thought I had already said yes and told my son he could have one without telling me) so anyway I had not done any research and I was told the day before the chin came to live with us he needed a cage and some supplies. I really wish I had known before hand because at the time we didn't have the money for the cage and were stuck using a temp cage. Then Wakka got hurt she somehow broke her leg not sure how it happened but she was in her cage when it happened and we had to have the leg amputated to save her. The vet bills were crazy luckily I had friends and family members willing to loan me the money. Wakka is now my chin because my son seen what I went through to save her and how much I loved her he gave her to me. I spent over 800 bucks on her a proper set up cage, toys, and many other things she didn't have to have but I wanted her to have. Wakka is in a Ferret Nation 182 all by herself (very spoiled)...lol Even though she is doing great and is very happy and healthy it still doesn't keep me from wondering if I could have prevented her accident if I had known ahead of time that he was getting her and had time to do more research. All I can suggest is if you get a baby don't have a wheel in the cage. I have heard that they shouldn't have one until they are 6 months old. We are sure that's how she broke her leg she loved to get on the top shelf and jump into or on to the wheel and we think that she broke her leg jumping to the wheel the vet said the compound fracture looked as if it was the result of a fall and she cracked her leg on something on the way down. But good luck in your journey to find your new family member :) and congratz on your new job.

after a year of college away from home, I came back home and started going to community college. I never got adjusted to living back home and moved in with my boyfriend. He started to see how i was still not adjusting and He told me that we could get a pet of my own as long as it was in a cage but i already knew i wanted a chinchilla. after all the planning and looking i brought home my benny in march. Now. I am impatiently waiting for my second chin. which we talked about since we brought home benny.

are you looking for a baby chin or a rescue?

I'd prefer a baby chin, but I'm not going to be TOO picky about the age. I'd like for it to be less than 3 years old though.

Waiting is extremely difficult, so I know where you're coming from! When we got Chia there was a two-week period between my deciding to get a pet and my bringing her home. I didn't even have a job, and had paid for her and all the supplies with student loans (what don't look at me like that ;) ) My boyfriend was angry that I had "rushed into it" and didn't wait until I "had a job at least." He had a point, but I was too impatient.

In any case, less than two weeks after we brought her home, I got hired at my dream job. And now he loves the chins very much!
