Strange noise in his sleep

I have heard my chinchilla make noises in his sleep many, many times over the years. Today he made 2 noises and this time they were so loud and it sounded so sad, its like a deep calling sound. It broke my heart, when I wake him up, he doesn't want me to pet him because he's sleeping. Why does he make these sounds? I always thought it was some kind of mating call when he's dreaming but I can't imagine him living with another chin because he is fine by himself and is territorial.

My little girl sometimes makes a sound kinda like a puppy whimpering when she sleeps and she is a single chin and hates other chins so I know hers has nothing to do with being a single chin...

I call it "daymares" bad dreams that they have in the middle of our day. I think if you wake them up they have a lingering anxiety... let him sleep it off and he'll be fine
