New chin mommy here.
We brought home a new 4 mo old chin 3/23. Come that Weds we were so in love we decided we better go get another quickly so they could bond while they were still young. On 3/28 we went and got another one a little younger (3 1/2 mo) and a different color.
They bonded quickly and we were able to put them in the same cage with no issues. They were grooming each other and sleeping together and still are. Now our original gray chin seems to be not near as friendly and cuddly as before. He doesn't want us to hold him or pet him hardly. He will allow us to give him scritches every now and then but he mostly pushes our fingers away. If we try and pick him up he bites at our fingers whereas before he really loved to be loved on. Before he was also really curious and outgoing during play time and now he seems a little skittish and on edge.
Is he jealous? Or does he no longer need us with the new chin? Is he maybe sick? Is this simply his true personality now emerging?
We are at a loss. Where did our sweet little boy go that loved us?!? He used to love to cuddle and get scritches!
This is not the usual personality he originally exhibited.
He is eating and drinking and still coming out to play at night, but I'm still worried about him.
One of them is having mushy stools, but I'm almost positive it's the mosaic one that is acting fine as he has been eating everything in sight and he was a little under weight when we brought him home. The mosaic kid has taken some probiotic - The gray kid won't touch the stuff! Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

The new chinchilla should have been quarantined for at least 30 days before putting them in the same cage. Quarantine is in a separate cage and a separate room. Since the new one was not quarantined, both of them will probably end up with diarrhea.

Remove the pellets for a couple of days and feed just loose hay. If that does not clear it up, then you need to take both of them to vet to be checked for parasites.

Now that your original chin has a chin buddy, you are not as necessary in his eyes. Also, you have not had him long enough to find out what his personality is. He may have been putting up with the scritches because he was afraid to do any thing else. Another thing to add to this mix is the fact that he is still a kit. You will probably see changes in his personality off and on throughout the first few years of his life. Oh, and kits can be really bratty if they choose to be. This is normal.

Thank you! Our kid was fine after a visit to the vet and taking him off the pellets for a few days. (No parasites) Thankfully, the other kid never got sick.
The vet said our kid was just eating too many pellets. We had been slowly switching him from what he had been eating to Mazuri pellets which the vet said is much richer... and tastier evidently. :) They love em.
We were initially told to put both kids in the cage together while they were both young babies so they could bond. We were informed of what to do if they didn't like each other. (The entire side by side cage bit...which we did for the day...but they liked each other after just a few hours.) Later, we were told by a rescue person we should have waited ten to fourteen days to make sure they were both healthy. All of the varying information from different sources can be very confusing. ;)
The gray kid is still not as friendly as before, but our little mosaic is a real charmer. (They kinda swapped personalities on us.)
We can see their true personalities still emerging so, I guess only time will tell. However, they do answer to their names and greet us at the cage door now and still allow us to give them scritches. Playtime a lot of fun now!

Just make sure you have one cage set up set aside in case they fight in the future, nothing like a issue on a sunday night when nothing is open.
