Hello...this is part one of our story.

Me, my step daughter, and wife each have a chinchilla each one is unique in there own special way.

At first we got a chinchilla for my step daughter which was raging about how cute and cuddly they are. So we bought her a female white mosaic according to the people we bought her from, we also got a ball, a wheel & a starter kit cage. The chin started to act like her alot, since she imprinted on the chin and vice versa, she would hold her from sometimes three to four hours a day.

About a month later my wife wants a chin of her own so we got another female since after reading alot about them it would be best if we got another female so we did at the same place. She was of the same liter, we had her for awhile, one day when we were cleaning her cage she jumped onto the floor and I accidentally stepped on her eye socket. We immediately took her to an animal ER that had an exotic animal specialist. She was away for three whole, days while we wondered if she would be okay. Finally we got word we could come pick her up, which there would be a long process for two-three months of nursing her back to health with oxbow critical care, in which case she got kinda fat and always slept.

I'm a special girl

After she was able to return to the cage, we noticed some behavior changes we bought pebbles in June of 2010, and poo-ma in July of 2010, the accident happened around September she was cage-ridden for about two months with steady nursing back to health in November of 2010 we re introduced poo-ma after we put them side by side for two weeks to get them back into being used to one another after being separated for such along time. Be putting her back into the cage however we noticed a change in Pebbles...she wasn't eating or sleeping much since she couldn't find her bunk mate.

After while we noticed a few things, about pebbles changing getting bigger we would hear poo-ma at night making odd sounds we would find her hiding inside the house in the cage when we went in there, pebbles on the opposite end of the side of the cage.

Hiding in the House

One day we were in there cleaning out the cage, we notice pebbles jump on the back of poo-ma she wanted non of that so she barked at pebbles can squeaked alot in her direction. We kept a watchful on two more closely that day, at one point my wife had to intervene since the exotic specialist told us to much stress could harm poo-ma with the traumatic accident that happened. Upon separation, we found out something that would change the way we look at pebbles from that day, pebbles was not a pebbles she, she was a he. We were lead to believe, from the store owners that we had purchased a female at that time, turns out we would have never figured this out if we had not talked to the shop owners, they said that the breeder had told them it was a female since males are very hard to spot at that young of an age.

So then we had to turn around and separate them yet again, we bought another small/medium cage I started doing more research on local exotic animal operations and found one at the university so we decided that pebbles (new found name charlie) would be snipped since when he was around her before this delima on the outside of the cage he would actually try to eat the cages bars, just to get into the cage with poo-ma we later found out that the ovulation period for southern chins is November to May, and the opposite for northern chins.

Everything after that was calm until I decided that I wanted to get a chin, which I bought at pet-smart, I should not have rushed my choice in buying a pet from them. We bought moki in March of 2011 he was stand offish, did not want to be held or touched in any way. He would make all kinds of calls during the night, as well as barking at us and urinating everywhere around his cage even up and down the walls. I almost got fed up and started return him, but my step daughter pleaded with me not too so I did more research on pet-smart. Seems like I was not alone with me pet problem other people had purchased various pets from this company, there was also gruesome video's that I found of forced chin breading as well as animal cruelty so after finding this I decided to keep moki in hopes that one day he might warm up to us, eventually he did only just about a month ago, loves his chin and belly rubbed, we have a Critter Nation cage, with the door blocked off from access to the other chins area mine seems to always want to try to impregnate poo-ma when we get them around one another so we keep them separate most of the time unless they're doing the ball exercises.

Hi there - welcome to cnh! your chins are quite cute.

You really need to ditch the ball though - they aren't really made for chins and they are dangerous - they can overheat in there. Not to mention they are rolling around in poop and pee - Yuck!

A playpen they can't climb up would be a much better option.
