I have a 1st time mother who gave birth for me on Saturday. The kits were born a healthy 48, 49 and 41 grams. I've notices a slight drop in their weights and took a closer look at the female. She has large hard lumps with raw spots under each nipple. I know its probably mastitis and have a vet apt for tomorrow. Has anyone had females that come back their 2nd litter and do fine? Or will this be a issue with every litter? I've had females have mastitis in 1 nipple before but never in both. I'm fostering the kits out for now. Has anyone had good results with drying the mother off or is it best to leave the kits on her?
