My chin with malo's favorite thing to do is check himself for hair rings, he hasn't done this since september. He started checking himself today which was a good sign that he's feeling better. Then I saw that his penis wasn't going back in and he was walking around dragging it. I took him out, checked it for hair rings or any else wrong with it, didn't see anything it was still moist. I made sure there wasn't any hair on it and helped it back into the sheath. I didn't think anything of it because for the next couple of hours it was in and nothing else happened. I just went to syringe feed him and he's again walking around dragging his penis on the ground. I took him out, checked it, it looks normal and helped it back in again. I'm concerned because this is twice now in one day that he's been walking around dragging it on the fleece liners. Is there anything I need to do or can do to help keep it in? I'm planning on calling the vet in the morning but that's 8 hours away and so much can go wrong in 8 hours. Anyone have any ideas what's wrong with it or what to do about it?

Make sure to completely pull his penis out and make sure there isn't a hair ring toward to back. I'd take him to the vet in the morning to see is anything is wrong. Maybe an infection or something.

I'd keep checking him and making sure it is in.

I've never had a problem with this.

A prolapsed penis can be a sign of the chin being run down, ill, or in pain. If there is no fur ring but he is not able to retract his penis then I would take him for a full review at the vet to determine if there is an underlying cause.

Is the chin near the time of a filing? Is the chin on full time pain meds? When was the last time the chin has had a x-ray to check the condition of the roots? Pain is the most common cause of the issue in malo chins.

He just had a filing on Tuesday and he's on metacam twice a day. He was showing signs of pain the day before, he only goes in his hammock after a filing that's his "I don't feel good" spot, otherwise he won't touch the hammock. But yesterday he seemed to have rounded the corner and was playing and showed no sign of pain. His penis stayed in overnight and hasn't come out yet today so I'm monitoring it to make sure it stays in. I'm able to get it back in easily when it comes out. The vet only wants him on the metacam for about five days to a week since he's doing very well after the filings. He went a full month between filings this time and for a week he ate his regular pellets on his own instead of critical care syringe fed. He had the gum pushed back down again but it's almost back in place, it had grown over the back teeth after the previous vet cut the teeth too short and it was infected. There's no sign of infection and the gum is going back to it's normal position, only a small amount was over the one side this time. He also trimmed some point very slightly because he wants the teeth to grow out some more since they were too short. He's doing good, eating critical care out of a dish and off a spoon instead of straight syringe feeding.

So I should just make sure to keep up his pain meds and monitor him so that if the penis comes out I can put it back it to keep it clean and moist and not dragging on the floor? If it keeps coming out I'll take him to the vet but if it's caused by pain hopefully in a few days with pain meds it'll stop.

Dehydration can be a cause for a penis to not retract on it's own after a chin has been cleaning himself. Even though he is getting cc, he may need extra fluids. He seems to be ok with it now, keep an eye on his water bottle level.

More than likely he is just really sore and the problem is from pain, give the metecan for the full 5 days this time, if it reoccurs in the future before or after a filing you can have the vet prescribe tramadol, its the next step up in pain meds.

Him and his roommate drink alot. I watch them go to the bottle constantly. I can hear them drinking all night too. Scamp is doing very well despite the malo, syringe feeding is easy I simple hold the syringe up to him in his cage and he eats ALOT. He even goes into the container I mix it in and eats while I refill the syringe. I don't have to force feed or restrain him to eat. He still takes hard treats though he sometimes spits them out but he still wants them. He eats hay from time to time. And he still goes to the water bottle constantly. He's the boss in the cage and when Andy goes to drink he has to push him out of the way and drink first then he'll let Andy drink. He can be a bit of a jerk but Andy lets him push him around and then goes and cuddles with him. So I know he's drinking and he's eating and acting really normal. The fact that he's playing with his penis again is a good sign. He use to do that all the time, usually whenever someone came into the room which is embarrassing to me, it's like a porno in there some days. He hasn't done that in three months but he started again yesterday so I'm taking that as a good sign.

Make sure he is doing a good job at cleaning periodically, sometimes they look like they are doing their business but don't actually clean well. The worst one I had his penis stuck to his fur and the fur had to be clipped to release it and the after 45 min that wad was finally released from the penis after warm water compresses. Never again do I not check, that episode was enough.

I checked it alittle bit ago it was a bit swollen at the base but it looked clean and normal. The tip was all that was hanging out today though and that didn't happen until an hour ago, I guided it back in and sent him on his way. He's so mad at the constant attention to his penis though lol.
