My female chinchilla, Zoey, had a gray kit on March 5. About a week later, I had to separate her from her older daughters because she attacked one. Today, I came home and she'd given birth to a white kit! Has anyone had anything like this happen before?!?!?!

Yes, about four days after my female delivered a healthy kit she delivered another one. Chins have two uterine horns and can sometimes get pregnant in each at the same time or shortly thereafter. Sometimes it's a month or so in between or sometimes just when she delivers, but she can open at any time. Does that help?

Yes, thank you. I knew they could get pregnant at different times but I just thought 17 days was a but excessive. Now my problem is that she seems to favor the older kit and is not caring for the new one. She seems to be making sure the kit is going potty but doesn't sit still long enough, as far as I can tell, to let the baby get warm and eat.

Yes it happens. Hve seen it here many times but ussually about 3-4 weeks after the first one is born.

I would take out the older kit for a couple hours at a time to allow the new baby some alone time with mom. I would do 2 hours with older kit out, and 2 hours with both kits in. Keep rotating until younger kit catches up.

Sadly, the new kit died yesterday. I had removed her ledge so mom couldn't get away from her too much, but she just didn't seem interested in the new kit. She was rather small and slow and I never got her eyes to stay open. I didn't expect her to survive after evaluating her Monday. I couldn't even get her to attempt some evaporated milk. She was just too little.

Aww, that's so sad. I had a chinchilla give birth to twins both very small, one died then a few days the other...it's heartbreaking :(
