Is it normal for a chinchilla to shred hay cubes?

I give my chinchillas hay cubes one in a while. Normally it takes him about 24 hrs to eat a hay cube and he loves them! But lately when I look at his hay bowl he shreds the hay instead of eating all of it. He does eat a good portion of it but he leaves like shredded pieces of hay cube. Is that normal? Is it because he is bored?

Yep! Perfectly normal. Some chins just love to shred them. I have a girl here that can demolish an entire hay cube overnight.

I'd say it's normal. The important thing is that chins always have access to loose hay. If they've got that then hay cubes are either something for fun munchies or something for fun destruction-ing, whichever mood strikes!

Chins love making a mess, or its more like re-organizing to there liking.
