OK, I see Charlie and Inca doing the usual grooming down south. Neither has spent a long amount of time on it or acted as if there was a problem. I had never did a hair ring check before, EVER! So lastnight during playtime in the bathroom, I thought I would give it a try. To my surprise Charlie behaved better than I expected. It actually scared me when I saw the massive amount of hair he had inside at the base of it. I pulled it slowly off and the rest is history. It was a wad of fur, kinda caked on there, not just a few hairs.....I feel horrible! Inca was all clean, thank goodness! For those afraid to do hair ring checks...learn from my experience and check for them!

Oh! At least you checked and got rid of it. Better late than never. Tribble turns a year old this October, so I will be doing my first hair ring check then. How old are your chins?

Yay for hair rings! BLEH :vomit: But I still think its better than being sprayed! We usually do checks monthly when we weigh the boys, unless someone seems to be overly obsessive with cleaning themselves.

I'll admit i haven't done a hair ring check on Rhino yet, since end of February when he came home. but he does seem to be very keen on 'personal grooming', lol, and there are no issues with pee output at all. guess i'll have to burrito the lil booger one day soon and get 'er done, lol.

You are a good mommy! Thanks for the public admission, I must admit I don't do them every month and I am overdue. *Looks for chins Viagra*

I wanted girls for that reason too, and thought that was what I was getting.....

I read on here that males don't generally need to be checked until their 6 months of age. However, my little guy is barely 4 months, and I've already had to start checking him (my tipoff was that he was cleaning himself ALOT).

I love showing newbies the fun of hair ring checks. They are like I gotta do what??? Don't beat yourself up to much, you caught it, learned a lesson, and I'm sure your boy is very thankful for the removal, maybe not the whole process though! :)

This is the one thing I can't get Paul to do :hair:. Lucky for Pythagoras, I'm usually home atleast once a month to take care of business. No hair rings yet (crossing my fingers it stays that way!)

I hate hair rings! Hey, at least you caught it! We've only had one or two here, in all the years we've had chins, so we haven't had it too bad... and it's preferable to getting sprayed (at least for us, we have some girls with some attitude).

Yeah, hair ring checks are sooo....not fun for me as a guy....especially the "unsheathing" part  I figured out a way to do it so I don't have to burrito my boys...They don't struggle too much when I do it...maybe they know I am doing something good for them ? :hmm:

I actually check my boys every couple weeks (probably overkill), but I always find rings (or at least some fur) and once one of my boys had a pretty sizeable amount (he was in breeding) which took some work to remove...and it was only two weeks since his last check!

Some boys are much better at the maintenance than others, for sure.;)

Thanks everyone for making me feel better!!
I didnt burrito either of the boys-just put them on my lap and kinda laid them backwards against my tummy! I'm glad I could remind everyone to do their checks, maybe this should be national "HAIR RING CHECK" week! :hilarious:

We have only had one hair ring in the entire time we have had chins. We check for them, but our boys seem to be very good at keeping things clean (which is usually done right out in front of every one).

I was so scared to hurt my chinchilla while checking, but I was also concerned because he was over a year old when we got him, and I'm sure his previous owners have never checked. We finally burritoed him today and checked, and many poops and hairs later, we were successful. He had probably 20 hairs down there! I'm so glad we started checking.

Six months, huh? I thought it was a year. Tribble is almost seven months. He doesn't clean himself excessively. I wonder if I should just check him now or wait. I don't mind doing it, I am kinda dreading it and I should probably just get it over with.. :p
