My picky puff doesn't seem to like eating lots of regular Timothy, orchard or any other grass hay. I've tried mixes, various brand, and cuts.
Just missed out on the fuzzy kingdom hay :-/

I worry about him because I've read his diet should be mostly hay. He eats the heck out of pellets.

He does like his alfalfa though, especially the leafy pieces.

How much alfy can a puff have safely?
He is a smaller male 510-520 grams and is 15 months old.

Loose alfalfa fed to chins has been a much debated issue for years, I pretty much ignored it and free fed alfalfa along with grass hays, been doing it that way for 15 years on 20+ chins with no issues at all, if the chin is already a pellet hog its on a 100% alfalfa diet, you might as well give loose as well for a different texture for chewing.

We free feed an Alfalfa/Orchard mix daily, and throw in a different cut of Timothy or Oat hay for a bit of variety. We've recently started using Sierra Valley Pet Hay and the chinchillas really seem to like it. It always looks nice.
