My name is Caitlin, I live on the East Coast of the US, and new to this site. I have a 10 month old standard grey chin named Gus, and have had him for about 5 months now. I'm wanting to add another, and am leaning towards a female so I can breed, but still on the fence about it.
Looking forward to hearing from you guys!

Welcome to CnH. :)

Before you decide to breed, please do some reading through the chin breeding and babies section, particularly the FAQs regarding why to breed and how to take care of kits if the mother dies or doesn't have milk. There is a lot of valuable information in there and in the breeding section that could help you make up your mind.

Welcome to the forum!

I second what Tunes said, and would also encourage you to find and attend a nearby chinchilla show. You not only meet a lot of breeders, but you also learn a lot about breeding quality chinchillas.

Thanks guys! After thinking it over, I decided not to breed. Its definitely not as simple as I thought it would be. Gus has hit puberty I suppose and is mounting everything in sight.. mainly me. I literally have to nudge him off me multiple times for him to finally quit. He tries to do this every time I pet him during play time. And I mean every time. I heard this phase was supposed to fizzle out around 14 months. Should I wait till after he gets out of this phase to add another male?

Again, thank you all for the tips!
