I had quizzed on of my potential chin people about what he fed his existing chin. One of the things he said he fed as a treat is a little flaxseed. I have no idea if this is safe. I told him I would ask to make sure. So is this safe??

I have not used it but I have heard of members using flaxseed in their chin cookie recipes.

I found this on the quality mutation chinchilla website...

Flaxseed-
Uses: Flaxseeds are rich in alpha linolenic acid (ALA),omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3’s are anti-inflammatory and promote bone health
Safety Information: Should be used in extreme moderation if given at all, contains high amounts of fat and can contribute to fatty liver disease in chinchillas.

It can also cause loose stools. so must be given in very small amounts at a time.
I had used it a bit in a supplement I bought from a breeder in Québec and did not care for what it did to their stools. So I ditched it.

I put ground flaxseed in my supplement, but very small amount compared to everything else. Hasn't effected my chins' stools in the years I've fed it.
