Hello Everyone,

So I am getting an FN cage for my Nanuk now since her and Sakka had to be separated due to Sakka loving to pro-create. Now they will both have huge cages, but here is my question. The FN cage that I have stumbled upon for the wonderful price of "free" housed three ferrets. The owner let's say was not the cleanest individual and would not clean it very well. He stated that it will be cleaned when I pick it up this weekend. I will of course throw away all the plastic and replace with wood shelves, but what will work to disinfect this cage. Will bleach work on its own or must I take an extra step. I also know that one of the ferrets was ill, and they had diarrhea for some time a few months ago. Thanks.

If you use bleach to disinfect, just make sure you give it a really good rinse to make sure no residue is left behind. I've seen people (bird people) use steamers too.

My used FN was NASTY when I got it. I threw away all the plastic. Pans and all. Then I used bleach once to get all the urine and nastiness off then I washed it with water and vinegar really well, let it air out outside and then did water and vinegar one more time.

Thanks guys, I was thinking of completely letting it dry out for at least 24 hours after a complete cleaning just to make sure, plus I still have to make the shelves for her, but I can't wait. I have had her in a temporary cage for now, and it is to small.

well i got the cage, and took it all apart and scrubbed it for about 3 hours. Let it dry put it back together made some platforms, and my Sakka loves it.

Here you go Shooper, I need to get some hammocks and tubes, but so far not bad...

Those are some cute chins you've got there! I like the narrow ledge along the back of the FN. My chinchillas love doing tricks off of theirs! Question, though: what kind of wood is that in the FN? I should know, but I put my finger on the name.
Also, love the angry birds!

In the smaller, black one (Feisty Ferret) switch around the wire and pan on the bottom so the pan sits on the wire bottom. I had that cage and did it, the wire spacing is too big for their feet, they can get one stuck.

Hello Woodrow that is a good idea, I will try it, she usually only goes down to the bottom to go pee, and stays on the top levels though.

Hello Carleigh, thanks for the compliment, I forgot the name of that wood, but I had it before in the bottom of the original cage when the two were together.

Looks like plywood... Generallly not recommended for chins. Look into switching it to Kiln Dried Pine boards, it's the cheapest wood that is chin safe for shelves.

great cages! Only thing I would say is take out the chipboard wood. It is not safe for them as it consists of wood chips, sawdust and resin bonded together. Other than that I love how you set it up!

Yup I was so happy when I got this one off someone I know for free, since he was going to throw it out.
