Normally, in South Florida, we keep our little guys strictly indoors due to the heat and humidity. However, this weekend we had a cold snap, and we decided to let our Dusty out for a run. Boy, did he have a blast!

Here is one of his pictures we took:

It looks like all he needs is a cape :bliss:

I'm glad it went ok, but I would never let my chins loose outside. Temperature is only one possible danger. Your chin could encounter any number of predators, chemicals, plants that are toxic, etc. It's too big of a chance for me. Mine only leave the house for vet visits, and then only in a carry cage.

We were with Dusty the whole time in the middle of an open field. We never took our sight off of him. We were very careful with him, and he stayed pretty close to us the whole time.

Anyway, here is a better view.

That's an absolutely beautiful picture of him running!

I remember when I was little, about 11, our chinchilla wriggled his way past me and shot out a door that had just been opened briefly. I was terrified and hysterical in seconds, but the chin took one look at the outside (I think there were a bunch of carolers coming up the street), decided it was too scary outside, and ran back in. Thank goodness he did - the only way I've been able to catch my chins is cutting off their escape routes, and I think they'd be way too elusive outside with a bit wide world.

Dusty might have stayed with you this time, but I think if the average chin gets spooked/curious and decides to make a run for it, most owners would not be able to catch them. I just think you might want to be cautious and take him out in a cage next time.

Thanks, Calcaneus.

You're right-not all chinnies behave this well to let them go out for a run (as ChinDaddy and I quickly learned with Gizmo.) I wouldn't recommend it for just any chin. But Dusty knows his limits, and comes right back to us when we call his name  Besides, he really enjoys his once or twice a year run.

Cool picture but even with my exceptionally tame chins they would never be let out like that. Chins are animals not children in fur coats and all it would take was for him to be spooked and he would be gone.
