I work at Home Depot and was wondering if the dowels would be ok to use in toys. The label says hardwood on it and so far nobody at work really knows what that means.

If you cant identify the type of wood, then you probably shouldn't use it. Better safe than sorry...

I know the Lowe's in my area sells poplar dowels. Ive used them in making things for my chins (in replace of a screw or nail). Unfortunately home depot never seems to have anything i might want for my chins. And if they actually do, the selection is horrid... But that might just be my area

Some woods are toxic and chemicals are used in the process of drying them. Better to stick with safe woods than risk it I think. KD Pine is always a safe bet and I know some people use aspen for shelving as well.
