Charcoal vs Ebony

Alright so here's a question I'm actually a little embarrassed to ask, but how do charcoals and ebonies differ? I had read at some point that charcoal was a recessive gene, but beyond that I can't seem to find anything that explains a difference in appearance. Could someone maybe post up a couple pics to compare the two?

Thanks Claire, that was by far the most informative site I've seen on the subject. It's nice to have actual information from a credible source, and seeing the pictures of various phases is really helpful too.
