building a play pen

I am building (well finishing) a play pen for my guys that I made from a bunk bed, it has wood slats that are pine and was wondering if I could actually use them in the pin as ledges or should I just play it safe and leave them on top for a roof? They don't have a coating on them, but I know that doesn't really mean much.

The bed is wood but the inside is wire mesh and/or wood I bought that is untreated. Now that the labor intensive part is done I get to have fun with toys and stuff inside!
