Has anyone heard of using avian full spectrum lighting for their chinchillas? My vet recommended this for my chin who has bad teeth and just wondered if this was widely used in the chin world?

I use full spectrum lighting in my chin room.

I have also heard of full spectrum avian lamps being used directly in front of a chin's cage with dental problems, in order to promote vitamin D3 production to aid in Calcium absorption.

I use full spectrum lighting in my room also. Depending on the type of lighting you have. I personally have florescent lights. You don't have to spend a fortune on ones that have the word "avian" on them. I found mine at Lowes. I know lots of bird people get their lights at Lowes also.

Since our chins are in the basement and do not get as much natural light as the rest of the house, we have changed as well to full spectrum lighting.

This seems to be coming up a lot lately as a solution to solve the vitamin D/calcium issue. I spoke with my vet, who is also an avian specialist, and she recommended against it. The lighting would have to be put close to the cage to get any benefit.

She said that with the chin moving around the cage there would be no way to know how much Vit. D benefit the chin would actually be getting. Most importantly she was very concerned with it burning the chins corneas, which she says was a good possibility.

I use full spectrum also. UV light is what is used for the treatment of dental chins, not full spectrum.
