Apple branches

Just a quick question on apple branches. I was given a few apple branches by an elderly man who says he has lived in his house for over 15 yrs and never sprayed them with pesticides. I have a couple questions, first would they be safe if they for sure hadnt been sprayed for over 15 yrs and possibly longer? Also some of the branches look green, is that how they should look? I havent cleaned or cooked them yet because i wanted to make sure it was safe before i started. Thanks
