I can certainly understand that! :)

    Zomg Virtual Chinchillas?!

Breeding for color was just added so now the baby you get from breeding is based on the color of the two parents. Lethal factors also apply in the game. The only thing that isn't realistic are the recessive genes just because would create some crazy colors. For example if you breed a violet to...

pregnant chin's kits taking all her nutrients

Did you suggest to them my theory about the swollen milk gland considering they can't seem to see the kits in x-ray?

has your chin ever done this??

That is cute. I had a hammock in a cage with a pair and they chewed a hole in it and would climb inside it to sleep just like that.

    A question I have....one or two?

I have found that bonded pairs do better with change and warm up to new people faster than single chinchillas.

    Chins and Rabbits

Yes, always better to be safe than sorry. We breed rabbits and chinchillas and I am always careful to wash my hands before handling chinchillas or their food after being with the rabbits.

    Dealing with kids

I know where you are coming from! My oldest is 12 and last year her school asked if I would consider being a substitute. I said no. I have been around her friends and some of them are just wild! It is the product of lazy parents that don't follow through on discipline. If a child knows there...

2010 Southern Unit of the Ohio Branch ECBC Show - Statesville, NC

We had a great time. Thanks so much for posting those photos. I didn't get a picture of my Reserve Champ on the table and your shot was great. Randy, it was great to see you again. I hope you didn't leave too far behind us. We had terrible weather driving home!!

anyone ever heard of a mouse on steroids?? :)

I used to have one of those cages. I bought a few of those small latches (like on dog leases) and used those to hook the door to the wall for extra protection. We have a killer kitty here so you can never be too careful.

What do you do with your chinnie waste?

I wish I could use mine for mulch but huge mushrooms grow where ever it is dumped. So I have a mulch pile at the edge of the woods to dump mine.

    I wonder why?

My guess is because of its natural ability to repel fleas and such. Its useful for larger outside aniamls. In the open air in an area an animal doesn't stay 24/7 its not harmful. Its just our little guys in small cages that suffer from people not understanding the difference.

    Cage Pictures

We had a little closet off of our living room that was not deep enough for anything useful so my hubby turned it into a chinnie cage. The bottom part is perfect storage for all of his supplies.

Questions about Bedding [long post, sorry]

You are correct cedar is dangerous. Any wood shavings that have that nice smell can be harmful to tiny lungs. Pine and Aspen are the way to go if you want wood shavings. :) If you are sick of having it tracked all over your house you can go with carefresh. I don't like the smell or the...

pregnant chin's kits taking all her nutrients

I understand your concern about stressing her, but the risks of not taking her outweigh the risks of stress in this case. Keep us posted. We will be worrying with you. ;)

pregnant chin's kits taking all her nutrients

Sadly we figured it out to late and lost our girl. Feel around on her tummy in the nipple area and see if she feels feverish there. Also, you might want to call the vet that did the x-ray and ask his opinion on that theory since he has seen her.

pregnant chin's kits taking all her nutrients

How long has it been since her last kits were weaned? I had a female do what you are describing a few years ago. It turned out she had a horrible case of one engorged milk sac. It was the size of a lemon inside her body. We also thought it was a pregnancy until she started to get skinny on...

    Introducing 2 chins

I'm not a fan of vanilla when introducing a pair. Its really helpful when you are introducing a third chinchilla as no one knows who the new guy is and so there is less fighting. I find that if you have kept the pair in side by side cages for awhile they already know each others smell so...

    Introducing 2 chins

You were certainly right to separate. In hindsight you should have separated the first time you have to throw the towel in, but don't dwell on it. :) It would be a good idea to place the more aggressive one in the cage you don't plan to keep as its best to take him out of his comfort zone to...

    someone please help

What do you mean by barbering? If he is nibbling around the other ones face and neck, chewing around his whiskers, that sort of thing, he is grooming the other one. That is a show of affection.
