    Smelly furr?...

BlahBlah, did she charge you for saying "I don't know?" That sounds like a really unsatisfying visit. Hopefully you get someone with more chinchilla experience on Friday. As for anesthetic, I too have heard that chinchillas can have a bad reaction to that. When I asked my vet about it, he looked...

how often can i feed goji berries? rosebuds? chamomiles?

Who is this Phoenix nutritionist? Some things don't seem to add up. If she had found the cure to Lupus, I think a lot of people would not be suffering today. Couldn't she just be in remission? Plus... near-death lead poisoning doesn't need to be "caught," the nausea would be so severe that...

Wobbly Female Chinchilla - yet vet says everything is healthy except for....

Oh, I'm not saying that she should medicate her pet without professional say-so, just sharing a similar exprerience! We mammals have a lot in common, so I thought it might be the same thing :)

Reputable breeders near Chicago or western New York state

Thank you! HBA standards sound exactly like what we're looking for :). The posted website shows there's breeder in Attica, only 40 min away from Purdue! Yay! Weirdly they have none in the densely-populated Chicago area.

A breeder near Purdue University in Indiana would also be acceptable. There are hedgehogs in the petshops nearby, but he wants to do this the right way!

    Not eating or drinking?

Try asking the breeder what pellets your chinchilla used to eat. then, Mix his old feed with the new feed you are switching to, and gradually ease him into eating the new thing. How many weeks old is he? Old enough to be fully weaned off of mom's milk I hope. And yeah, raisins are going to...

    Chin peeing on hands constantly

I laughed when I read this. Sounds like your chinchilla is marking you for her property! Something that works well for dogs is to make an unpleasant noise when they perform an undesirable behavior. For example, those guerilla "bird houses" that emit a high frequency noise when a dog barks--it...

    Freaking out!

When this happened to my chinchilla, the vet prescribed both an oral antibiotic and topical bacitracin to keep the wound clean. He also trimmed the wound so it would heal nicely over the bone. If the bone is sticking out, it can get serious. He also recommended cleaning the wound it with saline...

Would it be okay to replace loose hay with hay cubes?

My chinchillas loooove hay cubes. They've been on the KAYTEE "Natural Timothy Cubes" their entire lives (about 1 year), with no problems yet, according to the vet. I see them rip up the cubes into smaller pieces with their front teeth, then put the smaller pieces in their mouths and munch for a...

What happened at the vet? *Hoping it turns out okay*

    Cage Chewer

Maybe if you put something bad-tasting on the bars? I don't know if this would work for chinchillas, but some moms put vinegar on children's toys to get the kids to stop sucking on them. I know vinegar is non-toxic for chinchillas, as some people use it as a cage cleaner.

Wobbly Female Chinchilla - yet vet says everything is healthy except for....

I once knew a human with vertigo... he had the same symptoms you are describing! The doctors checked his ears for infection, and when they didn't find any, they attributed the vertigo to a previous ear infection (though no previous infection was in evidence). No antibiotics were given to him...

    Smelly furr?...

Poor baby! It looks like he really has tooth issues. You mught want to try going to a teaching hospital for a good price, because these issues can be expensive and force painful choices... My pet recently got treated for a less serious problem (broken toe) for only $50 at the Small Animal...

    Unexpected Kit Arrival

For kids and mom at this fragile point in their lives, it might be better to be in a quiet, stationary home with someone to watch them. However, it doesn't sound like their owner has that option. If the classroom really is too stressful, one would probably notice a difference in the mother's...

    Chins Fighting???

The same exact thing happened between my male chins at 6 months of age. They were going through thier first shedding, so at first I didn't notice that clumps of hair were being chewed off of the smaller brother! I only realized when I found the scabs, poor thing. I ended up separating them...
