WolunteerChin22 - sorry for late reply. To further clarify - yes cage cards give ear tag numbers, herd numbers of dame/sire, etc. which allow the breeder to know who the dame/sire were; however it is for the breeders use and would mean nothing to you . Yes the breeder cares about the genetics...
The only way you can tell an ebony mosaic is if some of the dark color is on the belly. A mosaic out of true standards will still retain the white belly.
I am sorry for your loss - since the previous owners mentioned that they almost died due to the heat, I would lean towards their having had severe heat stroke. In that case their core organs could have been permanently damaged. A heart attack would be my obvious "guess". Do not blame yourself...
I store my feed in a large metal trash can (bag emptied so that I can confirm the quality of the feed) - they make small ones that are cute painted or stenciled purchase at Walmart or as stated purchase a dog food container. I will only use hay that is within 3 months of its production date...
While I don't have that type of cage - I have never had animals that did not bond but I use custom 4' wide cages with introduction sections. One male/female I will use the smoosh method, with my breeding trios I use the "introduction" method. If I were to do it and I only had 3 cages, I would...
AcornHill Ranch (changing to Kismet Chins) is located just east of Dallas. I do not participate on this site often - however have 39 years of experience in the animal world - as a veterinary technician (now in human medicine), showing/training and rescuing dogs, showing/raising rabbits (no...
If you are wanting genetic information in general - rabbit colors work the same way as chins. Different colors but the genetics are the same as are cavys (guinea pigs). The rabbit groups are a huge wealth of information and extremely knowledgeable individuals. ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders...
This is an old topic but in case someone is still trolling - here's my "two cents". My cages are custom made so that they can be split if needed (male separated during non-breeding time, girls separated, etc.) I've never had a chin that hasn't bonded (yet). What I do is perhaps 1-2 days after...
I'm not new to chinchillas or this forum, joined in 2013; however I don't think I ever introduced myself. My name is Terry Jo Pyper and I use AcornHill Ranch as my logo (the ranch part is for the goats and llamas we had on our ranch not for chinchillas) and raise to improve my stock in ebony...

Hello ChinMom....I don't do forums much however I am a long time shower of dogs, many years breeder (Best in Show breeder) of rabbits (color genes work the same in rabbits and chins) and several years breeder of Chins and work in the world of human medicine.....
Easy answer...
cage suggestion
I know this is old but figured others might be "cruising" like I was. You might check for rabbit shows in the area. Many of the vendors supply Bass or similar cages or make cages and you will save the shipping and many times can get custom cages. Having shown rabbits for...
Added note on altitude - all animals along with people need to adjust to altitude (no matter where they orginated). The "preference" for animals is to keep them contained to a small cage (if possible) for 24hrs (or their full size cage in a room with the door shut and no excitement, i.e. remove...
How about planning a vacation to the Nationals show in March...you would have to drive though as airlines don't accept chins. It could be still winter weather for you in Iowa - but its how I always start by going to a show, be it rabbits, dogs, or chinchillas.
