Hi all - - I've been silent for a couple of years but I've come back since I know this community is a great wealth of information.

This may be long.

I have two chinchillas, both male, both in separate cages as they never bonded. One of them is a "rescue" chinchilla whom I've had for 3 years, with no problems what-soever. About a month ago I noticed symmetrical bumps on the tops of his toes on his back feet. It is just one toe per foot, but it is on the inside toe of each foot. He was not acting any different, he was eating/drinking/hopping around normally and would let me touch them and did not shy away from pain or anything abnormal.

I finally got my own life together and brought him to the vet this past Tuesday, looking for an answer as they didn't seem to be going away (they weren't growing either) She did a once over, and his overall health was great! But she was concerned about the lumps and took a little sample with a needle to send out for testing. She sent me home with Orbax and Metacam for him. She also wanted me to change his bedding, because the bottoms of his feet were a little irritated as well. I use wood pellets as bedding (no dust, was easier to clean) and she suggested Carefresh. I did question her about the idea of impaction and she told me its what she suggests for all her chinchillas and has never had an issue. She also gave me a cleanser to do a foot soak with for the bottoms.

Okay, so I went and got carefresh and bring him home. Clean out his entire cage and put the new bedding down. Give him a fresh new bowl of food and give him his meds and clean his feet. I wake up the next morning and notice him nibbling on the carefresh. So after work I went and got fleece, completely scrapped the carefresh and lined the bottom of his cage with a makeshift liner (I will be sewing a bunch of fleece items this weekend) Gave him his meds again, and washed his feet again. When I went to sleep he was nibbling on a hay cube.

I woke up this morning and notice there were MAYBE 10 small poops in his cage and that his food bowl didnt seem touched. I called the vet while as was at work, told her about the poops and that I didnt think he was eating. She prescribed Oxbow Critical Care and Reglan for him to start today. She also took him off the Orbax because the test results came back and his lumps are not a nail infection like she thought, so there was no use for the antibiotics.

It is now about 915pm; I just fed him 10ml of Critical Care which he gobbled up so fast, as well as started him on Reglan and gave him his Metacam. I rubbed his belly in soft circular motions for a little, but I'm currently a worried momma as this is the first time I've ever had a sick chin. I don't know how to tell if he stopped eating due to the antibiotics, or if he gave himself an impaction with being in carefresh for ~20 hours.

Any advice would be grateful!

The Orbax is related to baytril so more than likely has the same nasty side effects as baytril. You may need to hand feed him for a week or so until the GI tract calms down, make sure you get as least 45ml a day in him, if he wants more give him more, some chins can eat 120ml or more a dayt, this will help prevent GI issues to further. I doubt the carefresh has caused a issue so quick, its more than likely the orbax.

The vet has me giving him 10ml twice a day, so 20ml total. Last night he took the 10ml so easily, didn't have to hold him or anything he ate it out of the syringe. This morning before I left for work I tried to feed him again but he was NOT having it...I don't know if he was grumpy cause I woke him up at 5am and burritoed him or what.

EDIT: I forgot to ask in the above: should I up it to at least 45 or should I stick with the vet's prescription.

The last time he got Orbax was about 36hrs ago since the vet took him off of it. How long until it is out of his system? He is still on Metacam (1x day, I dont remember the dosage) and Reglan (.33ml 2x a day). I also have started giving him baby gas drops to try to help him out. *If anyone can help me out with the dosage here that would be great, I've been giving him .3mL 2x a day because thats the lowest dosage amount on the box, and all the threads I've read on here just say "baby gas drops" and don't say an amount*. When it comes to all his meds hes sucking them up enthusiastically, and even licked some of the Reglan off the floor where I dropped it.

He doesn't seem lethargic per-say, hes always been a calmer chin and is still calm, he just still hasn't pooped...which is why I'm worried. I thought the reglan would have at least extracted a little bit of poops. I massaged his stomach last night after feeding and got one normal sized poop, but nothing since. Part of me is expecting to come home to one giant poop like some of the stories here; I think I would be so relieved. I did notice he peed last night.

My plan right now is to take him to the emergency vet when I get home, unless by some miracle I come home to a poopstorm.

You will want to give probiotics daily for at least 2 weeks to help get his gut back in balance. You can pick this up at any drug store or health food store

What type of probiotic? I take acidophilus myself in like a chalky pill form and I know theres like 50000 different types and different strengths so I wouldnt want to get the wrong one. Also how would I give it to him?

Definitely go with 45mg, more if you can. And I'll second the probiotics as well. I've dealt with Baytril a few different times and had to handfeed every time. That family of antibiotics is evil, but you'll get through it as long as you're really proactive. If he only eats a little at a time, you may want to break it up into smaller feedings throughout the day.

If you continue to have issues with the CC, try Essentials for Life.

For probiotics, I sprinkle the recommended amount of Lifeline in a spoon and let them lick it up. Mine really like the taste, so I've never had an issue.

Good luck!

Okay, so I will definitely up his CC intake. If he only continues to eat a little at a time, how far apart should I space his feedings? I honestly am still worried about shoving more food into him when hes not pooping ANYTHING out.

As for probiotics, I'll probably pick up Lifeline for the future, but is there anything I can get that I don't have to order online? I'd rather get it sooner than wait another day. I have basically everything within my radius (Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, health food stores, etc) as well I work in NYC so anything there is within my resources as well.

If I go home and he still hasn't pooped, should I still take him to the emergency vet? Or should I start him on probiotics and see if he poops overnight and if not then take him?

On a venting side note; I'm definitely never putting them on antibiotics again unless the vet is POSITIVE it is an infection. Its frustrating that he was a healthy chin until I brought him in, and I feel like she kind of guessed it was an infection and decided to just throw antibiotics at him. Then the test comes back negative 2 days later. I now have to decide after I get him back to normal if I want to put him under anesthetics to biopsy his foot; because we're looking at a benign abnormal growth (kind of like a wart) or cancer. And I have that sitting in the back of my mind throughout all of this.

I've never done normal probiotics, but Stackie posted this on another thread: "I prefer to find the highest count acidophilus I can find- it's usually refridgerated and can be found at a health food store. I get the capsules and sprinkle them over pellets or mix it up with some critical care in a syringe and feed it."

If he still isn't pooping tonight, I'd go to the emergency vet so they can check for an impaction just to be on the safe side. I'm very pro-vet when it comes to pooping.

As for the foot, I'd go for the biopsy with the right vet once he pulls through.

Also, I'd consider switching primary vets once this is over. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. It sucks when they get sick... and it's terrifying.

Okay, emergency vet it is then. I have 2 of them within my radius so I will call both and see if they have any chinchilla experience. How would they go about checking for an impaction so that I know what to expect?

As for the vet I went to: I don't have a lot of vets in my area that specialize in exotics, and she came highly recommended to me by the local vet and a couple of people in my area. She seemed very knowledgeable with chinchillas and gave him a very thorough checkup, knew all about their teeth problems and issues they could face as they got older. The only two things I've found troubling is the medicine-pushing and the carefresh recommendation.

As for the foot, how do chins handle anesthesia generally? Hes 8 or 9, so hes not really old, but hes not young either.

It's been while for me, but I'm fairly certain they do x-rays and then an ultrasound if they don't find anything in the x-rays. 4/5 times, my guys had to be anesthetized, so I suspect it has a lot to do with the vet's preference and the temperament of the chin.

Nixi broke her leg at 6 months old, was put on Baytril and Metacam, and had to be anesthetized twice... once by the emergency vet and once by the primary vet. During the final check-up x-ray, she stayed calm and they didn't have to anesthetize her. Maia had a pyometra at 2 years old and had to be anesthetized. Boji had some kind of gastrointestinal thing around 6 years old and had to be anesthetized. All were fine after the anesthesia, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Definitely search around on impaction procedures since you'll be worrying all day anyway. That's the only part I'm unsure of. In the meantime, I'll cross my fingers that you have a giant, mound of poop awaiting you when you get home. :))

Before the vet, take him and put him in the bath tub or enclosed shower, make sure its dry and leave him there for 15-20min, if ever I questioned poo production this will confirm or deny if there is a problem, all chins that can produce poo will produce poo doing this.

This is such a good idea. Too bad I have 3 housemates so my shower is gross/always wet. I'm trying to think of another room I can do this in.

Okay, here is my 9pm update.

I got home from work and there was no poop, so I quick rushed him to the emergency 24hr vet while the doctor that has experience with exotics was still in.

He ended up taking him off of the Metacam and taking him off of the Reglan. He upped his CC feedings to 9mL 4x a day, and .3mL of baby gas drops 3x a day. He wants me to call my "primary" vet tomorrow and faxed them over a copy of the report. He also gave Larry fluids intravenously.

To make it easier here are the questions I asked with his answers:

1. How can I tell if he has a impaction?
- It doesn't feel like an impaction, but there is a hard mass that feels like a bunch of stool balled up. He isn't showing any signs of pain when I press on it, so therefore I'm leaning towards the side of hardened stool from sitting in him for a couple days of constipation. We would use an xray to check for an impaction but I have no experience Xraying a chinchilla or giving them anesthetics, and if there is an impaction our surgeon on duty has no experience with chinchillas.

2. Is the reglan helping his GI tract if it cant get to his gut? Can we give him a shot of it to get there directly?
- It doesnt need to get to his gut to work, it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Its up to you (me) to give him a shot of reglan or not, but if he DOES have an impaction it could do more harm than good

3. Probiotics? Yay or nay?
- No, until you talk to your primary. I have no experience with probiotics and chinchillas.

So Larry is now home, he ate 9mL of CC and nibbled on his hay cube for a hot minute, and now hes just sitting (at the top of his cage! which he hasn't done)

On a side note other points the vet brought up was that he 100% hates any wood bedding and wants me to switch BACK to a paper bedding. Right now the bedding setup I switched to was a fleece floor liner and a 8x8 glass baking dish in the corner with a little bit of pine bedding in there. He strongly advises against that.

So, thoughts?

He has no experience x-raying or anesthetizing a chinchilla. That really says it all right there.

The gas drops are good and consistent with the advice that I've read often on here.

His advice on probiotics just reemphasizes point #1. He doesn't know and isn't willing to take the risk. I'd still give the probiotics. I trust the senior members and breeders on here because they know chinchillas, generally better than any vet ever will.

From what I've read, his anti-fleece stance is dead wrong. Anti-pill fleece liners are used by a ton of members on here... A TON. If they caused problems, we would've read about it by now. I, for one, have used fleece and Pyrex baking dishes with aspen bedding for the past 6 years.

I'm definitely glad he's eating for you. And I'm sorry you're experiencing the same conflicting advice saga that a lot of us have gone through. The best I can suggest is to read everything you can on here for "gas drops" and "impaction." You'll see the consistency among members, with detailed reports of what worked and what didn't.

Its definitely frustrating to say the least! I keep getting referred to these vets that specialize in exotics and yet I feel like I trust all the breeders and etc on here because they have 100s of chinchillas in their care throughout their lifetime, vs. the possibly 15 that walk through the vet doors a year.

As for probiotics I didnt get a chance to pick any up. I have probiotics that I take myself; I have half a mind to grind one up and mix it with a little water and syringe feed him.

Im definitely sticking with the fleece. I 100% dont trust paper bedding. That was like day 1 advice 5 years ago when I got my first chinchilla.

I guess tomorrow if he STILL hasn't pooped I call the original primary vet and talk to her about x-rays.

Yeah, I've been there! I think most people on here probably have. My fingers are still crossed for you. Please keep us posted!
