    Swollen Foot?

No, I haven't really looked at his feet before. I suppose it could be a deformity or callus from a previously broken bone, though I haven't seen either in person before. I don't know how he runs on the wheel as he jumps off when I come in the room, but when he's jumping around the cage he uses...

    Swollen Foot?

Thanks for responding. He's not limping, he doesn't seem bothered by it. He was running on his wheel quite a bit today, but that was before I noticed the lump. I do have a smaller cage I could put him, but I'm a bit hesitant to separate him from his cagemates. I'll put him in the smaller...

    Swollen Foot?

Noticed a small lump on the top of my chinchilla's foot... Correct me if I'm wrong, but bumblefoot would be apparent on the *bottom* of his feet, right? This is just on the top, the bottoms look normal. Sorry for the poor quality photos. Anyone know what this is? I also found out that the...

    Paranoid Questions. :D

I got my mom to hold the standard while I checked for a hair ring again, didn't see one (didn't manage to get his penis all the way out, though), but after watching the video again I think what I saw was part of the sheath. I'll keep an eye on him for that. I weighed them today, hard to get an...

    Paranoid Questions. :D

Sorry for posting in a row. The standard has a small hair-ring. I tried to remove it myself, but was pretty unsuccessful. But, while he was upsidedown, I noticed he has the same discoloration on his feet as the mosaic. I'm attempting to attach a picture - do these look like normal feet to you...

    Paranoid Questions. :D

Here's one more: The mosaic has about an inch of black on his back left foot. It doesn't look in any way abnormal, aside from the color. Is it possible for them to just have different pigmentation in the skin on their foot, or is this something I should worry about? I suppose he could have...

    Paranoid Questions. :D

I posted here a year and a half ago about getting chinchillas, which ended up not happening as soon as I expected it to. I just picked up three males from the SPCA about two hours ago, and paranoia is already setting in. ;) I've seen two of them pawing at their nose/mouth area, but if it were a...

    Alright, thanks.

    Mango Wood?

I haven't seen it on any safe/unsafe lists, but it does have a fruit with a pit, so not sure on that one. Thoughts? Saw some hamster/mouse houses made out of "natural and safe" mango wood - thought it might make a neat toy to stuff hay in. Here's the product...

Yes, I am in BC. Thanks for the links. :)

A few questions regarding fleece, cages, and health.

Our average summer high here is around 68 degrees. Very rarely does it get over 70, and even then, it's still under 75. I'm not worried about the temperature, I was just concerned about the humidity, as it's near the ocean and does rain frequently. ;)

A few questions regarding fleece, cages, and health.

Thanks everyone for the tip about putting a hammock in the middle. I'll look into finding a dehumidifier that isn't too expensive. Sesame, there would be two chinchillas in that cage. :)

A few questions regarding fleece, cages, and health.

In addition: I live in a climate where it rarely gets above 75 degrees (I'll stick a thermometer next to the cage anyway), but it is quite humid. Is there anything I should do about this? I've read in some places that they should have dust baths more often in humid climates. What would that be...

A few questions regarding fleece, cages, and health.

I'm planning on getting chinchillas from a shelter either later this year or early next year. I’ve seen that many people use fleece bedding. What I’m wondering is, are you using sheep/wool fleece, or synthetic/polar fleece? Being vegan, I would really rather not use sheep fleece. Is polar...
