    RIP Ninja

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I like to think that Ninja's paradise is a giant Trader Joe's dried fruits & nuts aisle :D He doesn't have any cagemates (anymore) only neighbors, but don't worry I'll make sure they get extra attention and apple sticks. Thanks again.

    RIP Ninja

??/2005 - 6/29/2010 My first chinchilla who was everything I ever wanted in one: miserliness, craftiness, plumpness, bounciness, and an overall wonderful experience when you weren't nibbling my skirting boards :) I miss you so much, my beautiful standard boy. So heartbroken :'(

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

I had to put him down :'( he crashed so fast and by the time I got him to the vets he was unresponsive and they couldn't get oxygen through him. He was seen by two different vets so the 2nd vet who saw him last couldn't say much about his initial condition without an autopsy. I know the first...

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

Taking him back to the vet today. He was still nose-wiping this morning but his breathing sounds worse :(

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

The vet thinks my chinny may have aspirated fluid into his lungs from all the medication and syringe-feeding him Critical Care; maybe I fed him too fast? She told me to continue feeding/medicating him according to his Rx but to stop subcu fluids for 24 hrs. If his breathing is still labored...

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

Okay I am contacting the vet right now. I was giving him fluids through sub-q injections, but I think it made him feel really miserable to the point that I am hesitant to give more injections. Would it still be okay to give him fluids or the antibiotics orally?

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

He was squeaking earlier this morning when he was breathing, does that count as wheezing? He's not wheezing now, just taking shallow & frequent breaths. If he has a respiratory infection will his antibiotics take care of that?

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

Are there any signs of deterioration that I should look for? This morning he had enough strength to try wiggling out of his medication time, but I noticed that his breathing seems more labored (like panting) and now his head is bobbing around a little more than yesterday. He can sit upright on...

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

Thanks for the info everyone, my chinny is starting to look better. Still tilted and lethargic, but I saw him trying to groom himself and do a few nose swipes. He is also starting to sit up instead of lying down, so his progress is very encouraging for me :)

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

So should I inquire about using Baytril and antibiotic ear drops? He seems stabilized when resting in his carrier, but when I have to pick him up to feed him he's a mess and looks so sick :'( Yes I was going to say I'm surprised at how fast he got sick, literally overnight his condition went...

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

Antibiotics: trimethoprim sulfa Anti-inflammatory: meloxicam Nothing was mentioned about pain medication, mostly they said he was very dizzy. He seems better than when I brought him in, but still very sick :( I don't think I've seen him close his eyes at all today, is that normal? Even if his...

    Causes of Acute Head Tilt?

My 5ish yr old male chinchilla developed a head tilt and had to be hospitalized in one day :( When I asked the vet how it happened, or what caused it, she told me she didn't know...does anyone know what could have caused the ear infection? His cage gets cleaned weekly (he has his own cage) and...

Need Help with Oral Antibiotics (Syringe Feeding)

Okay, I will order the Lifeline and try to pick up some probiotic supplement for immediate use. Thanks for reminding me to monitor his water intake...I'd forgotten to check yesterday! He still seems pretty lively...still eats and wants to come out of his carrier cage when I open it to feed...

Need Help with Oral Antibiotics (Syringe Feeding)

What is the time frame for when I should try giving acidophilus supplement? ASAP or will anytime in the next few days be good? Also, the vet didn't prescribe any pain meds...I mean, I know his healing process won't be pain-free, but is it safe to assume he'll make it a week until his next...

Need Help with Oral Antibiotics (Syringe Feeding)

Thank you thank you for the suggestions. I ordered some herbal supplement from Carise and will be ordering some CC. The yogurt...it's not bad for chins? If that helps then I will go to the store today and pick some up.

Need Help with Oral Antibiotics (Syringe Feeding)

Is it often that chins will stop eating after going on antibiotics? As far as I can tell my chinny is acting pretty normal. He still shakes the bars of his carrier cage and is eating/drinking/pooing normally, but it's only been about a day...

Need Help with Oral Antibiotics (Syringe Feeding)

One of my chins needs to be fed Baytril via syringe. Problem is, he's very squirmy (I'm guessing he doesn't like syringes shoved into his mouth?) and he's got several wounds from his cagemate (actually I should say "ex-cagemate") on his back, so I don't want to use the burrito method. I was able...

    Chewing on Chin Spin

You can try vinegar...it seemed to deter my chin from bar-chewing, but I think once the smell wore off it didn't really help any. Or you can hope that your chin is just testing out if the wheel is something she likes to chew and will find out it's not all that cool. My chin chewed on the...

    Bass equipment pans

When I called the CA store I asked for 4" and they told me that it's not *quite* 4" but it's as close as they can get to 4". My almost-4-inch Bass pan works pretty nicely at keeping shavings in, and I think it was under $30 since I think I paid $35-40 when shipping was included.

    reasons for owning chinchilla

I've owned several types of pets including hamsters, rats, and mice. I would say that chins are similar, but also very different from other pets. One thing you really need to consider is that they chew CONSTANTLY! So in addition to always providing chew things (like apple sticks or wooden...
