    Calling Feisty Ferret Home owners!

I like your cage Woodrow :) To answer my own question about the cage construction, apparently it screws together with those hex screws that tend to strip so not good for taking apart and reassembling.

    485 grams?

One of my boys was only around 450 at a year old, he avgs 580-630 as an adult (he is still on the small side physically) and he is gray, not one of the typical colors you see mentioned taking longer to grow but if kept growing after a year. Your adorable chin in the picture looks great to me...

Rescuing VS buying from petstore or breeder

My boys came from breeders however when I got them, there were not any chins to be found near me (I had to drive several hours to pick him up). Not all breeders or rescues are created equal, some pet stores are cleaner than others. If I saw a chin I wanted, I'd have no problem buying from a...

    Travel?

Just wanted to mention that if your friend has not played with your chinchilla before and does not know the proper way to handle him, I would just have him keep the chin in the cage. It would be better for the chin to miss play time than to have your friend running around the house trying to...

Are there any "Chins for Dummies" guides out there?

What they need: Air conditioning, good water, good pellets, good hay, dust, some chew toys, a clean cage that keeps them in, and some attention and patience. Also access to a good chin knowledgeable veterinarian, vet visits can be expensive if needed although they do not require vaccines and...

    "Dusting"

Yesterday one of my boys was trying to dust on a pumice hanging toy, LOL. I would suggest to give the dust outside of the cage, not only will that keep her from rolling in bedding but it will keep less dust in the cage. It is also not good for you to inhale the dust, so dusting outside the...

    Oxbow food

What pellets are you switching from? If there is a difference in the nutrition levels or ingredients, that can be the cause.

    Orchard Grass Hay in bulk?

I get orchard grass from kmshayloft; she refers to it as bluegrass. It is not as cheap as buying a bale but I have no where to store that much hay anyway.

When should you get rid of wood?

The longest I have kept wood on toys is about a year. I found this awesome bird toy on clearance for $2 with huge 2" thick manzanita sticks on it. It would've lasted longer than the chin but I threw it away because it was in a female's cage that occasionally sprayed and it did not occur to me...

    Questions about shelves.

When I painted the dye on, I just let it air dry. If you are going to dunk/soak it in dye then I'd put it in the oven at 200 or 250 for a couple hours each side. Also I've use koolaid to dye pumice rocks or loofah and I don't think it'd work too good for shelves if you want the color to show.

    Questions about shelves.

I use vitacritter colorant for all my toy parts and I use to color shelves with it too. For the shelves, I just painted it on. I use 1" x 8" pine for ledges which really translates to 3/4" x 7.25" if I made full shelves for my cage instead of just ledges, I'd probably see if I could make them...

    "Fluffy"

Hi Keisha, I met Fluffy on my facebook page yesterday but am loving all these photos. I just wanted to add that chins drink very little water which you may know but some of them do not drink consistently. I had a girl that would drink hardly anything for 2 days and then drink a lot on the 3rd...

    Feed Stores that Sell Mazuri?

I sent you a pm with someone who may be able to help.

    Feed Stores that Sell Mazuri?

Did you check the Mazuri Dealer Locator? http://mazuri.com/Home.asp?Products=2&Opening=4 I would call a dealer before you go to see if they have chinchilla pellets in stock, if not they can probably order it for you. Also see if you can find a local breeder who feeds Mazuri, maybe they can...

    Black powder coating

I'm getting a quote on powder coating my old cage. For the color, I was thinking silver vein or gloss black. Well the description of the colors says a top coat is recommended for the silver vein to protect from elements so I'm thinking the black is probably more durable (no top coat...

    My experience with chin proofing

If the chin's head can fit so can the rest of him! I once was trying to catch a chin when it ran into the bathroom, I locked it in there so it'd be easier to catch in the smaller area. Well what I did not know about my bathroom was that under the sink cabinet was open and the chin just hoped...

    Really cool diy acessories

I'm looking for really cool unique ideas to spruce up my boys cage. After much debate about a new cage I think I'm just going to fix up what they have now :) I'm not into fleece things; if they are lucky I may put a hammock back in but they've chewed holes in them from time to time so I don't...

Lixit quick lock flip top water bottle

I had purchased one a couple years ago for when I was leaving town. Put it on the cage and water started coming out at one of the top seams :( I had another one that worked fine. I have one of the new valve ones and love it: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11180183

    No more water buddies...what now??

I'm pretty sure brass is a toxic metal however it's not like the chin is going to eat the nozzle. Also with my water buddies, the brass changed colors (I guess like tarnish), perhaps it depends on the water or maybe cause I like to bleach things. The lixit seems to be similar material as the...
