    Tail Wound

Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a try. Guess he'll have a purple tail for the time being! Can chinchillas see color..?

    Tail Wound

I did some research online - one site said to use saline wash to clean the wound, another said hydrogen peroxide. Anyone have any opinions on which may be better? I just know hydrogen peroxide's gonna sting. Also called my vet. Everyone's booked out a few weeks unfortunately! My next option...

    Tail Wound

I've been dunking his tail in chlorhexidine/water solution and applying neosporin. Still looks red and a little bloody, it isn't bleeding but hasn't scabbed over as much as I had hoped. Does not appear to be any pus/smell though. He still seems to be in good condition other than that. Should...

    Tail Wound

Yikes! Chinchillas are hardcore! I'll keep an eye on him!

    Tail Wound

I let my chinnies out to play today around the office, but one of them, Gus Gus, knocked over a cement tile and I think it fell on his tail unfortunately. There's blood/bleeding on either side of the tail. This is closer to the tip, probably about 3 inches from the tip. I tried to lessen the...

    Allergic to Chinchillas?

Yeah I definitely have respiratory allergies with the hay and dust. If I handle the hay I might get itchy if it pricks me a bit. The urine I'm not sure about, I clean their cages by hand and the urine has never caused a reaction if I touch it. It could be that it causes a reaction when it gets...

    Allergic to Chinchillas?

When I hold Mr. B I sometimes get little scratches from him, they turn red and puffy afterwards. Does anyone else get this and is it a Chinchilla allergy? I've read that most Chinchilla allergies are actually dust/timothy hay, but these are respiratory.

Soft Cut Hay- long term effects?

Oh wow, good to know! I will definitely start reducing their apple sticks! Are there other types of wood lower in sugar that I can give them more often though?

Soft Cut Hay- long term effects?

If apple sticks are a source of sugar, should I be limiting them? I usually put about 8-10 sticks in the cage every night. Between my two chins, maybe half will be chewed (they can be picky).

    Small poop

Ok I'll stop feeding them those and pass on the clover, thanks for the advice!

    Small poop

Ah ok, yeah he has normal poops all other times except sometime late at night/early morning. The poops do not have holes in them, they look normal. Small pet select chews that I have given the chinchillas so far are the buckwheat, rye, meadow grass, maize, and cattail. I can cut out the...

    Small poop

At night I separate my two chinchillas in their two level CN cage. I've noticed Mr. B leaves some pretty small poop in the morning, and am trying to figure out what is causing that. I removed his small pet select grass chews so that he only has timothy, orchard hay, oxbow essentials pellets...

New chubby chonker unit: Gus Gus

Another photo of them snuggling. ^_^ I notice Gus Gus likes to glom/lay on top of Mr. B (not humping/grasping him, Mr. B gets mad when he does that). Does that mean he is the dominant one? When I let them out to play though it's Mr B who is occasionally trying to hump Gus Gus.

Chinchilla Dust and Silicosis? I may have an irrational fear and I think posting here might help

Doh. Hmm well I think the best I can do is move their dust bath box to the bathtub.

Chinchilla Dust and Silicosis? I may have an irrational fear and I think posting here might help

Ok I'm going to give that a try with the sweet PDZ, and probably have the chins do their dust bath with their sneakerbox in the bathtub.

Chinchilla Dust and Silicosis? I may have an irrational fear and I think posting here might help

Hmm I'm having a hard time finding Blue Sparkle online (that isn't a 50 lb bag). Does anyone have experience using Chill Dust? I did some reading and it says there's less dust in the air?

Chinchilla Dust and Silicosis? I may have an irrational fear and I think posting here might help

I use a plastic sneaker box that has a magnetic lid to try to contain the dust. I'll switch to giving them dustbaths in the bathtub and I'll give the blue sparkle/Sweet PDZ a try!

Chinchilla Dust and Silicosis? I may have an irrational fear and I think posting here might help

Hmm this is seriously making me consider trying out corn starch - I have asthma from a bad bout of pneumonia a year ago, so my lungs are very sensitive. The chinchillas are in a cage in my office which I spend a lot time in, and even if I try my best to keep the dust from getting everywhere, it...

    Is my chinchilla unhappy?

Yeah I think I'm going ot try out the night time separation so Mr. B can be by himself for a bit everyday. Evenings/daytime/out of cage play time will be times they can be together. I might get another wheel possibly, its the only thing I don't have 2 of.

    Is my chinchilla unhappy?

Last time he saw a vet was early 2020 for molar spurs. I weighed him and he's the same weight he was before I bonded him with Gus Gus. So I'm gonna try this experiment where I separate them to the top and bottom levels while I'm sleeping. Then during the day/evening, they can move freely...
