Suggestions for Building a Cage for my Chins

caiti has a really nice cage design. I built mine out of five separate frames to dissemble easily because I move often. It is a bit heavier and costs me a bit more pine wood.

    shopping for hay online...

I recently bought 9 lbs of 2nd cut timothy from KMS Hayloft. It was much softer compared to the Petsmart ones. My chins still prefer eating orchard grass though. I guess they're just picky.

    Stress and Introductions

When I did my intro, I trimmed whiskers, dabbed vanilla on the noses, and smooshed. It worked very well. Have you put the two cages side by side to see how the stress-easy chin reacts? Best of luck if you try the intro!

    Depressed Chinchilla?

That's happened to one of my most outgoing chin before too. You can try offering the dustbath, that usually perks mine up.

    Successful Intro?

How is Sasha during playtime? I have a male that kacks and tries to bite me whenever I try to hold him too, but he's really sweet during playtime. His behavior is getting better with time so there is always hope! I have never been able to give any of my chins scritches. I also have a chin that...

    Help with new chin

    How is Nusta feeling now?

    white deposits in urine

I don't think that's abnormal. My chins always pee on the wood (rascals!). After it dries, it usually turns white.

    Successful Intro?

I would love to hear the story behind it, if you don't mind sharing. :)

    Introductions

Hope Sasha feels perky soon! He's a mosaic. Grey head with white body. He was the baby that I introduced to the other two. The black velvet one on the right went crazy at the first meeting.

Question for people who make toys?

I bought a lot of wood from Ronda once. The only toy I know how to make are chew sticks stringed up with sisal rope. What kind of toys are you planning to make?

    Introductions

Good job! I'm glad your intro went well. Is Sasha still sullen? I did the freetime first thing in the intro, ended up a disaster as well. Fur was flying everywhere. The aggressive chin not went after the new chin, but also turned against his bonded cagemate. I am so glad they all get along now...

    Introducing My Chinchillas

I've heard others say that the length of the whiskers is like their ego. Dominant chins will sometimes chew off other chins' whiskers. The technique really worked for my intro, maybe it'll help with yours. I didn't do the switching cage method, but I have heard of people putting the old chin in...

    Successful Intro?

If they're not fighting, I would say that's a successful intro. Good job! I have a chin that just sits there and does nothing. So being a bump on a log isn't too uncommon. Whenever I do hair ring checks, the boys look sullen and inactive for a few days afterwards. So maybe they just need some...

    Chinchilla Diarrhea =(

You can also try boiling the water to kill off any microorganisms too. My chins had really bad diarrhea once, and I started boiling the filtered water for them. They got better. It may not be the reason but can't hurt.

    Hemp rope?

I am not sure. Maybe some of the other members will know. I'll bump this question up.:bump1: I use sisal rope. It's about 8 dollars from Home Depot and the coil has a lot.

    Introductions

When I did my introduction, I trimmed whiskers, dabbed vanilla on their noses, and then smooshed them 4 times. My chins got along fine after that. I have also heard of the car ride technique, but haven't tried that myself. How are they at the moment?

    Introducing My Chinchillas

I introduced a 3 month male to two 9 month males successfully. I trimmed everyone's whiskers, dabbed their noses with vanilla extract, and then smooshed them together for 4 trials of 15 minutes. I had to do 4 trials because that's how long it took them to get along. Good luck on your intro!

    food pelets

I am not familiar with Kleenmama. Maybe another knowledgeable member can help you decide. I use Tradition and Manna Pro (for rabbits). I have some chins that prefer one over the other, so feed a mix and let them choose. I think other members also use Mazuri, Oxbow, and PRSC. They are all very...

    Bedding

I agree on switching out the Kaytee bedding. I use fleece liner with aspen litterbox.

    odd position...

That is a really funny position. My chins don't do that, but they do lean on each other.
