I have a small 1br. My chin is about 3 meters from my stove and my sink is a little closer. She's been a happy camper for 3years. I got her when she was 4. So she is aprox 7 and spunky/happy. No health issues.
I had a local seamstress make some for my cage(it's older). I use binder clips to hold them in place, they work well and only cost me about 10$ plus fabric and they match the rest of the cage.
I'm willing to bet changing their diet would solve the problem if the poops are loose and/or sticky. If that doesn't help a vet visit to check for Guardia would be my next step.

I made some fleece "bumpers" that I attached tightly around the outside at the level of each of the shelves and perches. Also one that wraps around entirely for the 4 inches above the base pans.
My chin came with this exact cage. She is roughly 5 years old and I assume she has been in this cage her whole life. the shelves and ramps and bottom are super rusty. I am going to need to fix them soon. Also the wheels are not top quality. But otherwise I am really happy with it. I only use 4...
Against all advice, my animals have hung out together, but highly supervised. The cat is petrified of the chin. The chin is fazed by nothing. The cat hisses and hisses and finally runs away. If the cat does not know the chin is out the chin will initiate contact and tease the cat, the cat runs...
