    Chinchilla chew toys

Yup, the large-sized small animal ones are what I got. They come with a few wood chews on there, but you can re-use the skewers and string whatever you want on there. They're pretty awesome!

Do you have chin gender preference?

I don't really have a preference. My chin is female, but that was just luck of the draw, since she was a rescue. I've never had a male chin, so I honestly don't really know how they differ. I do know that male chins need to be checked for hair rings periodically, which seems like it could be a...

Is my chinchilla going to be okay?

I'd get her to a vet ASAP. It sounds like it could be a neurological issue, or perhaps even something like an ear infection....? When one of my rats had an ear infection, she exhibited symptoms similar to what you're describing, though I have no idea if chins would react the same way. Did it...

    More chinchillas?

I do sometimes worry about Margaret being lonely. I know chins are naturally herd animals....but at the same time, they don't always seem to want a companion. I grew up keeping rats, and one of the cardinal sins of keeping rats is to keep them alone, because they tend to get super depressed...

    More chinchillas?

I just have the one....and even that was more than I'd planned to have, haha. That said, I adore my chin and would be open to potentially having more in the future. However, finding space for a second large cage set-up would be a challenge right now, so given there's no guarantee Margaret would...

New to the forum, please help asap!😭

Ugh, my chin likes to sleep just stretched out on her side, out in the open on the second floor of her cage. The first couple times I saw it, it scared the crap out of me because I seriously thought she was dead. She looked dead. But of course she jumped up when I poked her and was obviously...

New to the forum, please help asap!😭

Sometimes they'll just sit on one place for a bit, possibly to smell/listen to their surroundings, or perhaps sometimes to just take a quick rest. Mine will sometimes have her ears down for a minute when she first wakes up, almost as if it takes her a bit to fully wake up and perk up her ears...

New to the forum, please help asap!😭

Welcome to the forum! I'm sorry your chin is exhibiting concerning symptoms. I'm not sure what's going on with her, but it would probably be best to get her looked at by a vet. I don't necessarily see anything super alarming in the video.....but I don't know what her normal behaviour looks like...

Sand, dust or both for baths

I usually put my chin's dust bath in her cage for a few minutes right before I clean it. I used to put it in her playpen for a few minutes while I worked on her cage ...but then I had to sweep all the dust out of her playpen. Since I'm cleaning the cage anyway, it makes more sense to me to just...

Why is there a red spot on chinchillas foot??

My chin sometimes has little faint patches like that on her toes where the fur is a little thinner. Since it never seemed to spread or get worse, and sometimes will disappear for a while, I always just assumed more or less what Amethyst said: bits of fur get rubbed off as she uses those toes and...

    Interaction with other pets

I have lots of other animals, but I don't let my chin interact directly with any of them. Too much risk of injury or spreading disease. But the dog and the cats do sometimes come up to her cage. I'm pretty sure she's sprayed urine at a couple of them, haha. She really doesn't care for them (not...

    Diarrhea

Yeah, you should be able to buy infant gas drops at any pharmacy, or probably even a grocery store. The name of the actual drug is Simethicone. It's a liquid that usually comes packaged with a little oral syringe that you use to administer it. You might have to encourage him a bit to get him...

    Diarrhea

Normal chin poops are pretty hard and dry. They're slightly damp when they're fresh, but they dry out fast and as soon as they're dry, they're pretty hard and solid. The small size and lack of frequency is what's concerning. It could very well be gas, so at least until your vet opens tomorrow...

    Diarrhea

Not pooping is concerning. Is he eating? If he's having small, infrequent poops, it could be gas (I know lots of fiber can cause gas in most animals, including humans, so I assume it's the same for chins, it seems possible the fiber supplement is causing excess gas). You can try giving him some...

    Chinchilla chew toys

Those toy kabobs are a great idea, I may have to get some of those! And I completely forgot about loofah! My chin LOVES those. They're also really easy to string onto wire (or kabobs) and hang on the cage. I like to string them up with apple wood slices, chola wood, and sometimes pumice stone.
