I visited Lowe's today and was looking around for wood to buy. I came upon a bunch of them and all of them said KD which I assume there kiln dried I asked one of the employee to make sure it was, he didn't know if it was. Someone else answered the question for me and it is kiln dried. I was just wondering what does the SPF stand for because it was on every label that had "KD SPF". Would be safe to buy it for the chinchillas?

Thanks :]

SPF stands for "Spruce Pine or Fir" meaning that the lumber came from a forest with mixed trees and they did not sort them out. Spruce and Pine lumber is almost identical, but Spruce is not on the chinchilla safe wood list so I would not use that lumber.

Sometimes the tag stapled to the wood has the type of wood on it; for example I buy "Premium white pine." Also check the different sizes 1x4 and 1x6 are spruce in the lowes down here, but anything larger is pine.

Stevie, you should go work at Home depot or Lowes. Then someone like me with no knowledge would be served correctly. :))

When I went, both said they didn't carry KD Pine and I still searched everywhere. Heck, they couldn't even grasp the kiln part (not saying they are stupid) but they weren't getting it. One guy once he asked me what I wanted the wood for said I've got a great one for shelves for your guys and took me to medium-density fiberboard.

I called a lumber yard and asked if they had untreated KD pine. He gave me clear untreated KD pine. On my receipt it says it is C&BTR Pine. When I look it up it says something about southern yellow pine.

I'm not sure if it is or not, but would that be an issue? I got 1x12x12.

Ratchilla - the pine you got is fine. C&BTR means grade C and better, which in english means there should be almost no knots on the board. It isn't necessarily Southern Yellow Pine but it might be. Either way you are good.

I know for a fact that Rona carries kd pine (at least the store here in Edmonton does). look for it in the molding section. i picked up some really nice boards there for Rhino's cage base and shelves. they are just shy of 6 inches wide and come in a variety of lengths. the boards in the molding section are usually sanded much smoother and nicer than those in the lumber aisle too.

for example I buy "Premium white pine."

Yup! thats what we purchase too. you can usually tell the price difference. but i always always inspect every board we buy because i dont trust people or employees to put things back where they are supposed to be. and i always look for the KD on the wood. i cant tell you how many times the staff has tried to sell me something that does not say that even after asking. the best lesson is to be informed when shopping!!

It has KD on the wood? Where at? I have no idea what it looked like and I was trying to tell from where the guy pulled it out at (but I'm a newb to all this).

at the home depot and lowes around me it has a little white sticker that says it. i have also seen it burned into the wood. i know i have some scraps at home. i will check them out and see if i have one with a label and take a pic & post it.

Thanks for the information. :) Now I know what it stands for now and will stay away from that. I'll try Rona and see if they sell it there.:D

All of the wood in my cage is poplar and the chins love it but it is LOUD when they chew. It's very reasonably priced though and has served me well.
