I know that there are different types of hedgehogs.
Being curious, which kind of hedgehog is the one that's being kept as pets?

How about Uist hedgehogs? Are they wild or can they be domesticated?

ps: I was reading an article about Uist hedgehogs being culled, that's why I'm curious.

The most common species of hedgehogs that are kept as pets in the US are African pygmy hedgehogs.

The hedgehogs we keep as pets in the US & Canada are a cross between White-bellied and Algerian hedgehogs.

The Uist hedgehogs are European hedgehogs. In many if not most countries it is illegal to keep a European hedgehog in captivity as they are protected animals.

In case you were thinking it would be nice to import the Uist hedgehogs into the US... an importation ban for hedgehogs was implemented in the early 90s to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease.
