weird noise and convulsions. video included!

My chin keeps making these hiccup/sneezing/coughing sounds and he kind of shakes a bit too. I took him to the vet and they prescribed him baytril. Anyway, just a few minutes ago he started to do it again. We were able to get it on tape this time. Please watch the video and help me. It makes me very concerned. I sounds like he is in pain!!

sorry it's so dark. But you should be able to hear his hiccups and he shakes too when he is making this noise as though he is coughing so hard that his body shakes.


Side note: He eats fine, drinks fine. Didn't lose any weight (gained 10g actually). He seems a bit less active than usual but not lethargic or anything.
This has been going on for 2-3 days already.

It was hard to see but I don't think he's having 'convulsions'. It sounds to me like he's just chortling to himself. Let's see what others think.

yeah we didn't want to move too much because he tends to try to suppress it when he sees us around.
It isn't really that bad this time, but before the vet visit, he shakes uncontrollably when he makes the noise.
This is the first time I've heard it.

How old is he? My little one (he's just over 2months old) sings himself to sleep and it sounds very similar to that.

The weird thing is that I cannot point anythign else wrong. No crusted over nose or mouth. His eyes aren't wattery. Poo is normal. He runs around and has good apppetite.

The only weird thing is that noise and his shaking that concerns me.

That crying is quite common when something is bothering them (baytril taking its toll on the GI tract is my guess), but I'm not so sure about the hiccups, they sound somewhat serious.

Your description makes me think of pneumonia. What was the vet's diagnosis? To be sure, take the chin back to the vet so he can re-check his lungs and ask for an x-ray too, maybe he needs to adjust the antibiotics? Suggest an x-ray of the torax area as well, maybe a hernia is causing the hiccups.

The vet never got to hear his coughing or hiccup sound he makes so she said it could be a respiratory infection or cold and gave us baytril. The thing is that he has made these noises + the shaking for 2 days and never showed any other symptoms of a respiratory infection since his lungs were good too.

He is almost 2 years old so it isn't a baby's cry.

Make sure to give him something good tasting after the baytril, it can stop them from eating. I was thinking bloat or a tummy ache, but a respiratory problem is just as likely. I hope he feels better soon, that is definitely not a noise I like!

The vet actually diluted the baytril with sugar water to make it more tasty. I also give him a rosehip afterwards as a nice treat. Yes, the sound is very worrisome and I don't like hearing it at all.

Does anyone know how long it takes for Baytril to start working? I'm hoping to wake up tomorrow and see him healthier and stop making those noises. Are there any side effects of Baytril besides lost of appetite (he hasn't had this yet).

I have not had any other side effects, and even with that sugar syrup it still tastes gross (I have tried it...ha). The loss of appetite is the main problem with baytril, it tastes just so bitter and I think it hurts the tummy like when we take antibiotics. I always force some critical care after the baytril, but that is just me. I feel like having something in the stomach helps and it really gets the taste out of their mouth.

he is doing it again and i'm concerned that baytril isn't doing anything for him.
i have a feeling that the vet might've diagnosed him as having a cold/respiratory infection based on my observation that he has been hiccuping or sneezing a lot lately. he has no other symptoms. is it safe to give baytril to him even though him having a cold/infection isnt 100% positive? he seems to be in pain and i don't know what to do!

my one chin makes that sound sometimes. kinda like he is going "hhhmmmph". he has malo though and is on some different type of meds. i just put him on a new med so i am going to see if he keeps making that sound.

yes i think he is making that hhmmph sound because of the medication and he is whinning. i haven't given him his meds this morning yet but i will in a bit. i think i'll give him acidophillus after his meds and maybe that might make him feel at more ease. he makes noises when he breaths or maybe it's a coincidence but he squeaks and makes a high pitched nosie when he breaths and his nose flares.

if he is in pain he needs pain meds, the baytril is just an antibiotic. if he is grinding his teeth he may be in pain. just like with any antibiotic you need to get it in him consistantly for a couple days to see improvement. if you don't see any changes perhaps a visit to an exotic specialist would be in order.

It sounds to me like it is coming from his nasal area. If that is the case his lungs would sound clear to a vet. I did have a chin that had problems with her nose/sinus area, but her lungs were nice and clear. She did not have any discharge either. I did have her on antibiotics.

The antibiotics take anywhere from 3-5 days before you will see improvement. If you are going to give the meds, don't skip a dose. Give what is prescribed and give it time to work.

Give him acidophilus in between doses to help prevent stomach upset. Of course make sure he is still eating and if he loses interest help by doing some hand feeding.

I have chins (even adults) that do little sweet baby noises when I get real close to them and give chin rubs and sweet talking to them BUT they do not sound like your chin does.

The noises your chin is making would make me very concerned. I would keep a very close eye on him.

Yes, his lungs were indeed clear to the vet which is a relief because we can rule out pneumonia. Today is his 2nd day on his meds and we have been on time. His appetite is very good but I've given him acidophilluls in between doses too. I'm keeping a very close eye on him but I haven't heard that horibble noise for a while so I'm glad.

That's just great to hear! Maybe his sinuses are drying up and he's getting better already. I love that his appetite is so good!

I've been in the room with him for about 6 hours and heard his little noises a couple of times (about 4). A few times were just single sneezes or coughs but there was one that was continuous as shown in the video. He makes more noise this time around. He keeps sticking his nose outside the bar as he is trying to breath.

What I noticed is that he keeps wiping his nose/mouth area with his paw everytime he has an episode of coughs. He has been eating but I've noticed that his poo is a tiny bit smaller than usual. I gave him crushed tablets of acidophillus with shredded wheat 2-4 hours after baytril.

The vet told us to give him Baytril for a week and if his isn't getting any better then we'd do xrays.

What are the symptoms of bloat? I cannot rule out every other illness that may be possible because that noise that he makes is the only symptom that I observed.

Also, we have another chin that is currently in the cage with him now but he seems to be doing fine. No sneezing/wheezing. No problems with appetite and he is full of energy. Would is be a problem if they are in the same cage? Could a URI be transmitted and if my other chin doesn't have a URI does that mean we could rule out infectious illnesses?
